I have multiple problems with my 1996 5.2l dakota. When I got the truck it wasn't taking care of very well and it has a laundry list of problems. It only as 95,000 mile on it.

1. When driving it sounds like marbles rolling around in a metal can. Seems like it is coming from the transfer case but it is hard to tell.

2. It will not engage into 4wd.

3. Sometimes when putting it into drive or reverse it will make a loud cluck and slightly jerk the truck.

4. The last thing is I replaced the MAP sensor in it and I can't get the 12 code to clear even after 50 starts.

1-the marble sound may be a clip[lock] in the transfer came out of place,if you can,t do it then have someone check out the transfer, this could be a bearing or chain, before it breaks the case.

2-does the tranfer shift[the handle in the truck move in to 4x4 and then back to 2wd ok]?if yes then it could be the 4x4 vaccuum lines on the transfer to the front housing or the vaccuum modulator on the front housing

3-common with the rams and daks, play in the rear housings, pull the back cover off and check the pin
[about 1" in dim]to see if it is loose in the case]put a catch cantainer under it theres about 2qrts fluid

4-code 12,beginning of codes,don.t worry about this,not a problem,some pcm,s hold this code longer then 50 starts

I looked at the transfer case today and the case housing has been ripped opened by what looks like a tranfer case chain. Do I have to replace the whole transfer case or can I get the just the pieces that are destroyed?
