Subject: 4.7L Dak warning light IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 4.7L 5 speed Dakota that has, for the most part, been a great truck to drive. IT has 60,000 on it now, and during the last 10,000 or so miles, the engine light has been coming on sporadically. I did the evap fix, tightened the hoses from the pump and canister.
NOW, it seems like it occasionally feels like it's running on 7 cylinders. No rough idle, but it has a little hesitation during daily acceleration. I'd like to take a stab at it this weekend, but thought I'd ask before I get the usual runaround from the local parts place. Thanks.

Message: How old are the spark plugs? PCV valve? Throttle body ever been cleaned? STP fuel injector cleaner (black bottle) may help. If a check engine light, unplug battery cable for 30 seconds and reconnect. If the light comes back on, have the code checked. I have 74K on my '01 4.7. One check light was for passenger side airbag switch, one for a bad O2 sensor.

Message: '01 Motorsport,
Thanks for the tips. I did the plugs about 20,000 ago, and am planning to replace them soon anyway. Maybe this weekend. . .ha ha Never cleaned the Throttle body, but now will add that to the list. By the way, is it even possible to upgrade to better plug wires with the newer plug ends (coil on top)?

Message: Take it to an Autozone and have them scan for the code it is throwing. They do this for free. Then you can decide if it is something you can do by yourself or need to take to a shop

Message: Thanks for these tips. I did the clickety click with the ignition, and saw two codes, one, a P121, and the other a P442. I cleaned the throttle body, and injector cleaner, and the truck seems to be her oldself. That evap code is a needle in the haystack, though.

Message: Joy,
Is it a manual or auto? I have a 5-speed, stock motor and trans, and haven't had the light come on for the tranny. Word of warning, though. At 60,000, the transmission shift rail bent, and ended up requiring a rebuild on the trans. Looking at the failed part, it was obvious it was designed incorrectly. No help from the manufacturer.

Message: the 2000 Dakota QC 4wd is a automatic trans
right now the dealer said they need to take apart the trans to see exactly. Thank god for extended warranties. But being out in the middle of the desert with no one for miles is scarey when that little lite decides its time to surprise them.

Message: I had mine come on several times..about 3 or 4 in the last year. I did unplug the battery cable everytime and it alleviated it for a few weeks each time. This last time it happened, I had teh differential fluid changed. Not sure if that had anything to do with the prob, but light hasnt been on in quite some time.

Message: Very good chance that the P0442 can be cured by replacing your gas cap (12 bucks at the dealer parts counter). Had it in mine, it would change around between medium and small evap purge leak codes (P0443 think? maybe 0445, I don't remember.)
The P121 though, gives two faults:
TPS sensor not correlating with the MAP sensor signal. And, APPS voltage input below acceptable voltage. Not sure what the APPS is, never heard of that one. I'd look into the TPS and MAP sensors on that one though.
Now go buy a new gascap!
