 Subject: 98 Dakota Shifting problem

I have been searching this board and I noticed that quite a few people have had the same problem as I am having. My truck works great but it tends to shift out of first at a higher rpm around 3200. I ran the OBDII scan and returned a P0720 Output Shaft speed sensor. I replaced my rear speed sensor and it improved quite a bit but it still is having some problems. Even after I clear the code it comes back right as it is shifting into second. Any suggestions for something I have missed.

On the 97s there are two sensors, vss and output shaft sensor, both on the tranny with the output shaft sensor the most rearward. I know on the 98s and up that the vss was moved to the diff and incorporated with the abs sensor but I'm almost sure that the output shaft sensor was retained on the tranny. Take a look and see if that's true. Wouldn't mind a feedback one way or another.

The VSS was incorporated with the ABS sensor and that is the
one I just replaced. I beleive I found the output sensor but I am
not 100% sure. Does the output sensor have a plastic nut that
goes right into the bottom of the tranny? I have read around
that it also acts as a plug and I will lose some fluid during the
change. I am not sure on this though. I am going to head into
my dealer tomorrow and pick up some parts and I will let you
know what I find out if you are still interested.

I'm trying to find where it is exactly located myself. I have a general idea but won't know for sure until I take a look tomorrow morning. The FSM says it's located in the overdrive gear case and a schematic of it looks like a plug with a wiring harness coming out from it.
Someone on the Durango board wrote that t is a plastic sensor that screws into the left side of the transmission, near the tail of the transmission, and has a wire harness coming from it. It is below the level of the trans fluid, so fluid comes out when you unscrew it.
I've also seen various reports on the web that report periodic failure of the sensor for 97-99 models.
Someone wrote that it's a $26.50 part and $19.50 labour to replace it based on a $65/hr shop rate.
Would appreciate any feedback you get on it.

Yeah I read that same thread. I am almost positive that I have found the sensor. It kind of looks like a spark plug. I have not taken it out yet but I will be working on it tonight if I get the part and will let you know what I find out.

On my club cab, there's a crossmember rearward of the tranny pan. I believe the sensor is just to the forward side of the crossmember and screwed into the tranny case not directly from below but at bit from the driver's side.
I was wrong before when I said that the output shaft speed sensor was located to the rear of the vss. The vss is located rearward of this sensor on the other side of the crossmenber and inserted almost laterally from the driver's side. Of course you wouldn't have the vss there on your 98.
The only other wiring harnesses that I see are all right up around the tranny pan itself.

Well I just bought the sensor for 19 bucks and got it all installed
and it fixed my problems. It was on the tranny pan towards the
drivers side. It kind of looks like a spark plug. In one of the
other threads I was reading it says it will start to drain the tranny
fluid so I made sure I had a bucket. When I started to loosen the
sensor the tranny started to dribble then pour out so I worked as
fast as I could to make sure not too much leaked out. After
tighting the sensor and plugging the harness back in I took my
truck for a test drive and it worked like a charm. If you want me
to take any pictures of the old part or where the sensors were
located let me know. Not to sure how different the 97 and the
98's are though.

Thanks for feedback, Aaron. Glad it worked out for you. I'm guessing that it is probably in the same location except that the 98 tranny doesn't have the vss where mine is ... maybe just a plug there. If I ever get that code I'll be sure to get in touch with you.
