Subject: Oil pressure jumps around ..help?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1998 Dakota r/t with a 2000 r/t motor. The oil pressure goes up with the rpms and when at idle it drops all the way down. Is it supposed to do this! Cant remember if my old 98 motor did this!

Does it drop all the way down to zero? If not your fine. I just had a problem with my 99 318 dropping to zero at an idle and had a problem with metal in my oil. I now have a new engine.

I should drop to the first line at idle ... mine doesn't have a number associated with it. If it drops to where it is with motor shut off, Check Engine Lamp should illuminate.

Spec is above 6lb at idle. If you're over that, you're OK.

It stops at the line when at idle. My old motor never did that so i just found it odd.

It stays in the normal operating lines.

So is this normal or the sender?

dakotaracer ... i've had that problem where it slowly fluctuates between first (not red) and top center line at both hiway and street speeds. It took me almost a year(of concern) to find the solution.

There is a big, heavy wiring harness which runs across the firewall well below the level of the sending unit. The two wires to the sending unit branch from this harness and are immediately pulled downwards from the weight of this harness. My guess is that there's enough pull on the wires, along with the movement of the engine, to give a loose connection. I raised the wiring harness and zip tied it in place to take the tension off the the connector. It worked for me :-) HTH.

Just replace the sender first, its cheap and easy to do. Its common for these senders to go from what I have read.
