Subject: 97' 5.2 has valve rattle? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97' 5.2 Dak, 5 spd, 2 WD with 97K on it. When I go to pass someone or just hard acceleration at 50 MPH+ it has a top end rattle, I think it's the valves. The rattle only lasts a few seconds until I let off the gas. I bought it off the orginal owner and it has had excellent maintainance, I have the records and dealer receipts to prove it. The owner told me that it likes 89 octane much better than 87, so that's what I have been doing. He(a older gentlemen) told me never ran it very hard and has never towed anything with it, and I don't either. Has this happened to anyone else and what can be done about it? A valve job?

Message: try better gas, I think your noise is pinging. Mine did it once on a bad tank of gas and I added some octain boost and everything was all better.

Message: I have a 97 5.2 and I had the same problem...then I started running premium (92 octane) and it doesn't really do it...

Message: It also may be getting the famous intake manifold pan gasket seal failure which causes pinging and increased oil consumption.
