Subject: Painting valve covers... IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
I have a 99 R/T. I just ordered a set of harland-sharp roller rockers from the group buy deal. I figure, I'll just stick with the stock valve covers for now, but I'd like to dress them up a little. What high temp paint do you guys reccomend... and do you think I'd have to sandblast or chemically remove the old paint first? or could I just use a primer over the old stuff? Thanks,
-Nick

Message: U Don't need 'high temp' paint. Look at all of the current custom builders and they ALL use simple base/clear or single stage auto body paint.
If they are in good shape you could get away with just degreaser, scuff the old paint with 600 grit and a prep sol before primer and paint.
My suggestion is to go with body color matching paint, or contrasting depending on your taste.

Message: normal "high temp paint" is good up to 500 degreas. Most spray paint is also good up to 500 degreas. read the lable and as long as it will take over 300 degreas you should be fine.

Message: If you wanted to spend some money, you could send them off to get powdercoated too, that always looks great.

Message: I don't have that kind of dough. I'd love to pull my engine and do some serious modding and powdercoating but this guy is a daily driver and I cant afford to be without transportation for a period of time. Thanks for the advice on the paint. I think im going to start this project this weekend. Oh, also about the rockers not having enough clearance... Ive heard that these particular rockers dont need a new set of covers, they will work with the stock ones. Just to be sure, I'll check it out before I install the whole set. Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it.
