I think my stat is opening too soon because it doesn't get as warm as it used to. That would cause the gas mileage to drop a little, but not 4mpg. It may need new O2 sensors, but I'm not getting any codes and the thing only has 17,000 miles on it. I'm afraid it's the transmision slipping.

If it had a leaking base on the intake it would definately ping. I can put 87 oct in with the AC on and pull a 4000lb trailer and it still won't ping.

For whatever reason there is a big difference now between 60 and 80mph. The O/H computer used to read 18mpg @ 60mph, 17/70, 16/75 and 15/80.
Now it reads 17/60, 13/70, 11/75, and 10/80.

I'm going to give it a tune-up soon. I've held off on this because I can't imagine anything needing a tune-up in 17,000 miles. This will be the first Dakota I've owned out of 7 that the gas mileage didn't go up between 15,000 and 30,000 miles.

I'm not real sure. The thing runs a little on the cool side. I think that's half my problem. I may have just gotten too used to the 4.7L. It would blow hot air by the time I reached the end of my driveway. This thing takes about 2 miles before the needle even starts to move. It takes 5 miles before the heater warms up. By 8 miles it is finally blowing hot air. This isn't helping my fuel mileage, but I don't think it's causing the 4mpg decrease either. I have filled the tank up AFTER the engine was up to operating temp and it still wouldn't go 230 miles on a tank of gas (19gal) driving 75mph. It is getting worse by the day. The performance is now starting to drop off as well. I think something major is about to go wrong. My 68 BIG BLOCK Charger got better gas mileage than this and it didn't have an OD.
