Subject: V8 Dakota oil psi IP: Logged
Message: I am looking at buying a 92 Dakota. It has a 5.2L V8. After warming up the oil pressure will go to 0 when it is at idle. Just touch the gas and it comes right back up. The guy I'm buying it from says it has been like this since he bought it 280000 miles ago. The engine was rebuilt at 199000 miles. Is this normal? I work on Porsches for a living and am completely clueless about this problem. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Message: Normal spec'd oil pressure for a 5.2L is 6psi (minimum) at idle and 30 to 80psi at 3000rpm. My 5.2L stays just below midrange at idle and 3/4 range under load.

Message: Tom,
Does the oil light come on? I don't know about the later models, but the 92-94's have a dual pressure sensing switch. One side of the sensor has the guage hooked to it and it's a variablr resistor. The other side of the sensor is just an on/off switch. It is supposed to come on between 7-9psi. Check to see if someone has disconnected one side of this switch (the idiot-light side). If everything is connected, then you have a problem with either the on/off-idiot light switch, the pressure sending unit, the gauge, or the idiot light in the dash. They may have pulled the bulb out or unhooked the wire so they could sell it.
Also, the High Pressure Relief valve in the 5.2/5.9's are bad about sticking in the open/relief position. Debri will get lodged between the relief piston and the relief valve cylinder and cause it to stick open. This will cause your oil pressure to do exactly what your descibing. Chances are, whoever did the rebuild didn't follow good house keeping proceedures and got dirt in the engine. One piece of grit is all it takes to make that relief valve stick open. Never-the-less, you should have a light coming on to tell you your oil pressure has fallen below 8psi.
