Message: That intake was developed for late 70's smog motors to give them some better throttle responce. It is a two plane intake that has tiny runners that go directly to the individual plenums like a single plane. Its a radical design that kills power above 3000rpms. I doubt it would be good for more than 1 or 2 mpg more.

Message: i think just about every carbed 318 in the '80s had a 2 bbl manifold on it.

Message: That SP2P part number is an Edelbrock intake known as the single plane/ dual plane or SP/2P. I'm very familiar with it- It's very different than a stock intake and was also made in a 4bbl version

Message: Intakes are single plane or two plane, not both. The SP2P looks just like the later Performer, but with 318-sized runners/ports. Thus, "Small Port 2-Plane" intake. It was an attempt to improve fuel economy with OEM engines by increasing port velocity by using the tall slender runners that run all the way to the plenum instead of splitting off down the runner. I still have my old 4v SP2P. For a 318, it makes power above 3 grand. Comparing the 318 heads to a 360 swap, the 360 made a tangible power increase above 5 grand, but the SP2P made better low rpm power and produced1+mpg better. My 318 had the CompCams 260 and I shifted at 5800 rpm. Yes, the Performer, and later intakes make more power all over the range, but that's what I had then, and it was a great runner. MP offered this same basic layout for Jeep 360 V8's in their 1992 catalog P4529596, so it's got quite a bit of room for a 318 to breathe.

Message: so, i want to get some good gas mileage (atleast 15+). what can i do that might also give me some good low end torque? but if not a 2 bbl, i could just get a 4 bbl with those covers over 2 of the bbls that open under higher throttle. anyways, please help, thanks, Steve

Message: First, are you running an LA or Magnum engine? The SP2P was made for LA engines. Again, this is fine for OEM cams, but even a mildly warmed-over engine will do better. If it's an LA-you'll come out much, much better just popping for the whole Performer-Plus package. Easy, matched, ready to go. Any way you shake it, a Performer intake, or and M1 dual plane for LA or Magnum with a mild cam will give you a much better overall package.
The carb you want is one with vacuum secondaries. Preferences run the gamut, but the Edelbrocks tend to be pretty close just bolted on, but get better with a little tuning.
A more powerful engine (within reason) will actually get better mileage because it doesn't have to work so hard to do the required task, so unless a good SP2P falls in your lap for cheap, just snag a Performer.

Message: Hey bro, why don't you think about an edelbrock ld4b with an economy 600 cfm edelbrock 1406. I made the switch from a 2bbl carter bbd and it made one hell of a difference. It gave me more power (quicker throttle response) in all rpm ranges. To my surprise, I even gained better low end power and my gas mileage improved. I will now do the 340 cam and I just had my heads redone (1.88/1.60 valves, tuliped the bowl etc.)the trick is get these teens to breathe and they really wake up. From what I hear, I will be getting better power and mileage with these mods.
