Subject: 340 questions IP: Logged
Message: I currently have a v6 in my 92, but i was wondering if it is possible to build a 340 for it and have it fit right? Or is this even practical? I want some power, but still have it handle with some offroading, and it also being a daily driver.

Message: Unless you have a 340, it would be more practical to use a 360.

Message: You have the inherent advantage of an extra 20 cubes in the 360, and all the same mods work, but there's a reason the 340 was called "Baby Hemi" when it hit the streets, despite the fact that it's not a Hemi at all. The 340 is a natural runner. It has that 1.85 rod ratio like the 318. The 360 is close, but not quite as good. However, the differences are so close, and offset by the larger 360 displacement, that you're gonna be pretty even. As things go, 360's are everywhere, and 340's command more cash. It's pretty much win-win in performance options.

Message: Have a brodix 340 in my demon. Go for a 360. lot more available. 340's are nice if you want a steel crank, they came standard equipment on 68 thru 71 years, and cast iron shot peened cranks on 72 thru 73 year models. Even a steel 318 truck crank will work nicely. (cross drill the crank pins on steel 318 truck crank to lighten----a good shop like muscle motors can do this) . But truthfully, you'll probably never break a cast 360 crank or a cast 340 crank. Remember that 340 cast cranks have their own balancer as a balancer off a cast 318 crank doesnt have the offset on it (internally balanced) and the 360's have too much weight offset (externally balanced). And if you got a little extra coin, get a cast stroker kit for the 360 , they are reasonably priced and they will give you big-block power for your 4x4. Just make sure the price includes balancing (read:$$$) 340's tend to be peakier, while the 360 make power on a broader curve.

Message: go with the 360 unless you got extra money to burn. 340's have a few things that are specific to them ie 4.04 pistons.
