Subject: 5.2 to 5.9 swap questions IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 4x4 Dakota 5.2 auto and a 99 Ram 4x4 with a 5.9 auto. I've been thinking about swapping the engines between the two trucks. I know the older pre-magnums 318 and 360's were balanced totally different , but are the 5.9 and 5.2 balanced the same? I know the Dakota has the smaller transmission so I can't swap torque converters. I will probably beef up the Dakota trans. even though it is in excellent shape. I would like to keep the computers in the trucks they came in , will they operate properly with the different engines? I'm also concerned about the larger oil pan on the Ram clearing every thing on the Dakota. I'm hoping this will be a straight swap, simply yanking out the motors and reinstalling them in the other vehicles. If this works I can get the extra power I want in the Dakota and better MPG in the Ram which is a work truck and it shouldn't cost anything. Thanks for the help.

Message: Nothing's that easy anymore. Sad to say. Okay, the LA and Pre-Magnums are externally balanced, but the Magnums require less weight, so an LA setup cannot be used. Around 1996 the balance weights for the 5.9 were moved to the flexplate, so the zero-balance torque converters could be swapped between 5.2 and 5.9 (provided they also fit the tranny), and the 5.9 was balanced by the weighted flexplate. When the weights were moved from the converter, the bolt patter for the flexplate was also changed to an even space patter, and they should have a "90 degree" stamp on the flat side of the converter (the side the flexplate bolts to). There should also be a sticker on the flexplates warning of the changes.
There's a reason the engines have different computers. While a 5.9 will run with a 5.2 computer, it will not run optimally, which will defeat your whole swap. Go the extra mile and do it right the first time. Get the computers flashed to the vehicle they need to be in.

Message: Gen1Dak- Thanks for the information. I guess I need to find a flexplate that has the 5.9 balance for the small Dakota automatic. I'm not sure if they ever put the 5.9 with the small transmission.I wonder if I can swap the computers from the big truck to the Dakota I know they are tied into the transmissions but I wonder if they have the same sensors.
Zach- I'd like to increase the Mpg in the Ram since I use it for hauling tools to work and would like to increase the power in the lighter dakota which I have for fun. Although the Dakota can blow away my Ram,I can really feel the extra torque in the big truck. I know its a lot of work, but I'm sure the extra power in the 5.9 will make the Dakota scream.

Message: The flexplate bolts to the engine, and the size is standard regardless of transmission. Actually, you should check the part numbers on the converters just to be sure they won't swap even though they're with different trannys. I don't know if the computers can be swapped. The HP units in the MP catalog do not match, no matter how you mix the combos and model years. The computer swaps work with pre-96, but from '96 on, it appears to be a different ball game.
