Either this guy is luckier than I am or Dodge builds damn good engines. I say this because Fram is about the worse oil filter you can buy. Castrol isn't much better.
There's a reason your gage stays pegged over to the 3/4 plus mark. It's called viscosity. 20-50w is for engines that run much looser tolerances like ones built in the 60's. But, you got 285,000 miles. What can I say. Dodge builds them right.

Message: I HAVE AN O1 DAK. JUST REPLACED THE MOTOR DUE TO THIS SLUDGE PROBLEM. 83000 MILES WITH REGULAR OIL CHANGES. PICK UP SCREEN CLOGGED, OIL PRESSURE STARTED JUMPING AND FINALLY MOTOR BEGAN KNOCKING.
I AM ALSO ON THIS LIST AND HAVE BEEN EMAILING DODGE EVERY DAY ONLY TO GET THE ANSWER "YOUR WARRANTY HAS RUN OUT". THESE ENGINES ARE PIECES OF S#$T. DODGE IS DEFINATELY NOT GETTING ANOTHER DIME FROM ME. AFTER READING THESE FORUMS IT SEEMS SYNTHETIC OIL IS THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP OUT THE SLUDGE. CANT WAIT TO SELL AND BE RID OF THIS AL BUNDY MOBILE.

Message: A class action lawsuit will result in a VERY HAPPY LAWYER that represents everyone, and a bunch of disillusioned clients that will get a check for $18.95 or a coupon for the next repair in that amount at a dealership for all their efforts and trouble...
Ask my wife, she was a Vorizon victim... A coupon for a $18.00 rebate as long as she signs up to get ripped off for another three years! Or, if she wants the $18.00 cash, she can meet in perosn ion San Diego with the District Attorney and explain why she wants the $18.00 check rather than a discount on a new three year contract.
I guarantee the lawyer's share is CONSIDERABLY more than the $18.95 we would all get.

Message: I need an opinion. My Dodge dealer has a promo with Quaker State. If I have my oil changed at the dealer every 4 months/3000 miles, they will pay for any engine failure. The dealer gives me free oil at the changes. Since the dealer documents the changes and only charge $20, I thought it would cover any sludge problems. Does anyone out there have the same offer? Does anyone think it will be OK? I'm debating about doing the oil changes myself using Redline oil. Its the only group 5 true synthetic on the market.

Message: If the dealer will do it for $20 and guarantee against failures I would go for it. Does it have to be done from the time the vehicle is brand new? Will it still cover it when it is out of manufacturer's warranty? These are things I would definitely get in writing. I don't know what local dealers offer, because I only take my truck to a mechanic that is a friend of the family. I know he will tell me the truth when I have a problem. I don't trust dealers. I use Mobile One or Amsoil and Purolator filters and have not had any problems with sludge. Had the oil pressure on the guage drop to 0 about a month back, which scared me because of all the sludge stories I had heard, but it turned out that a recent off-road trip in a snowy cornfield had knocked the connector loose on the sending unit. Whew!

Message: i had a 1990 Dakota with the 3.9 and had no problems at all with it. I used Valvoline 10w30 in it, it had 135k on it. i now have a 03 Dak with the 3.9 and i got my first oil change at the dealer b/c it was free. they didnt even fill it up all the way, it was like a half a quart low. So i had a good freind of mine do it were i work, and use Valvoline 10w30 and a Tough Guard filter. and so far the oil looks how its supposed to and it is low at all either. When i first got the truck after like 2k? it used about a quart of oil, i think b/c the engine was still breaking in. Next oil change ill used the Valvoline 10w30 Durablend and a step up from the Tough Guard, then after that oil change ill use the full synthetic Valvoline and the Extended guard filter from Fram. Later yall....

Message: I see much squabbling over sludge in in the new 4.7 engines. I have a '97 Dakota 5.2 with 84k on it and I have been using Amsoil 0W-30 synthetic oil from 6k miles. I also use their filter, filters down much finer than the aftermarket filters. I change the filter at 12,500 and oil at 25,000 and so far it runs like it was suppose to. I also had an '01 LHS with the 3.5 engine, and it came unglued at 30k. Engine sludge was the problem, Chrysler dealer was not going to repair because of infrequent oil changes. I had the oil tested and it did have a sludging problem but also mine wasn't the only one. Several of chryslers engines have an apparant heat problem related to the intake which in turn causes the PCV valve to malfunction, hence the sludging begins.
I had a meeting with the district rep for Chrysler and afterward they had the pan dropped and inspection showed a slight amount of sludge. He turned and told the dealer that Chrysler would replace it free of charge, which they did.
I know of a few others who are using Amsoil in the manner I mentioned, and so far no apparant problems. One of the vehicles is a '99 300M with the same 3.5 engine and over 80k miles.
Good luck, Stan

Message: Stan,
I really am skepticle about going 25K on an oil change. I'm a little obsessive compulsive, I guess. When my oil turns a color that I can't see through it anymore I change it. I think your LHS would still have the original engine in it if you had done the same.
A pcv valve is a pcv valve. There's really nothing there to go wrong. This thing sucks vapors out of the engine via vacuum from the intake. When it clogs up with sludge it fails. If you go 25K miles on your oil you are going to create 10 times the amout of oil vapors because the oil has broken down. That's going to cause the pcv valve to clog and fail sooner. Your lucky that you got a new engine. Especially if the oil sample came back like you said it did.

Message: I really have no problem with that many miles on filter and oil changes. Like I had said earlier, when the company that tested the oil gave me their report, they had already experienced sludging problems with the Chrysler engines. It was an apparant problem with the intake heat that started the sludging process which in turn will aggrevated other conditions. When you have two identical engines, and one, like the bunny, keeps on going leaves little doubt that it was not the fault of the oil. I have never flushed an engine and have never had any problems with it using while using Amsoil products. I even use it in my '87 Yamaha Venture Royale, 78k miles, it still runs great.
