Subject: After H.O. Cams....Where's Your Power? IP: Logged
Message: Back in December I installed the H.O. cams in my 4.7. I also put a ported 68mm T.B. and home-brew air filter set-up on at the same time. I then reset the computer. It's been about 300 miles since. I haven't really noticed a big difference out of the hole, but from 3000rpm and up LOOK OUT! It's like a totally different truck. I was just curious to see if anyone else noticed the power change in the same range.

Message: I noticed a power gain throughout the entire range. Great mod for anyone who hasn't done this yet.

Message: I'm about to order my HO cams. Kinda scary after reading that other thread with the bent valve stem but sounds like a bad install to me.
From what I hear, the cam swap is really the ONLY mod (besides boost) that you can actually feel with the Butt-Dyno!
So, what do some of you think about going one step further than the HO cams? I tow but not a really heavy load. Just some Quads on a trailer. What do you think about the cams bagger than the HO? The 206's I think? They need the shims too, YUKK.

Message: A custom PCM flash is another mod you can really feel, if you can find one for your year 4.7. The hotter cams are a lot of extra work and expense and push your power higher up the rpm range - that's why I went with the HOs.

Message: FLDak,
Very nice. That pretty much confirms what the butt dyno has been telling me. I don't know how I missed your post in October though, because I come to this site often. Oh well. Thanks

Message: Yeah. I'm pretty sure I'll just stick with the HO cams Kowalski. I've always used BIG cams and yes they KILLED bottom end all to hell but at 7K RPM's LOOK OUT he he he!
Oh, I miss that but it would do absolutely NO GOOD in my 4X4 Dak not too mention needed work with the PCM, etc to get a cam that nasty to even work. The rev limiter would be active just as the engine wanted to really breath!
I think the HO cams should be a good mod for my Dak. Should be about like dropping in a RV cam in an old school engine. They're not nasty, but you deffinitely can feel an all around power increase.

Message: I did mine a week ago - got tired of looking at them for months. 8hr.s total. 4hr.s of actual work. 90% or more of the work is getting the damn valve covers off,,then it's a breeze. My motor actually had both sides of the cam caps marked (I read were they only did the driver side on a whole bunch of dakotas) -That and making sure you didn't drop anything in,,and that the rockers are positioned correctly - don't screw up the magnetic pick-up for the cam sensors!
I definitely feel it in mine,,,very happy with the mod. Now it's time for a ton of overdue maintenance......... - Plus just got an P0161 code this morning..sux. I think it's the passenger side O2 sensor - I just put on some JBA's,,,,,maybe that's why?,,or the AC dripping juice on it?
eh...excuse my rant,,,just gearing up for class...
