Subject: straight pipe???
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 97 5.2 with a flowmaster and a bran new factory replaced cat. I was wondering if it would hurt my valves, engine, hp,trq if I were to put a straight pipe on it. Would it be any louder???? softer??? Any response is greatly appreciated, and thanx for the help!!!!!

A straight pipe after the cat will just be noisy, without that much performance, you need some back pressure for proper valve closure. A straight pipe in place of the cat (meaning a straight pipe only), will burn your valves during hi rpm running and when you shut it down, cold air will rush in and crack your valves.

Thanx doc!!! I hope that it won't hurt my performance as wel as my 30k dak. engine. it just seems that my dakota is not loud enough, I think it's because my pipes are ran like a nova (at an angle blowing towards the ground) and... I think that adding a straight pipe will give me what I need as far as sound. I know that my 97 RC, 3.90 diff,5.2 FIPK flowmaster truck is not that fast but I want peolpe to be intimidated ya see... that way I don't have to race. Once again thanx for the much needed info!!!!

lando981- Dont be so hard on yourself, that truck is fast. Just needs to be uncorked a little. You essentially have a R/T motor, just with a little less power.

Here's what I did on my previous 97 5.2L:

1. I had the glass packs that were on it replaced with a pipe. The sound was awesome.

2. The stock cat went bad and I replaced it with a high flow cat that I bought from jegs. I, with out a doubt, had a power increase. I didn't notice a mpg increase or decrease. Once I had the high flow cat on there the exhaust was considerably louder. I set off a few car alarms.

I now have another 97 (I totalled the first) and I already have the pipe in there and am planning on getting the high flow cat again.

Exactly what do you mean about your statement "you need some back pressure for proper valve closure"? I thought valve spring pressure controlled valve closure.

i have a 98 with a 5.2L and i have no muffler, just a cat and straight the rest of the way back. i have had no problem with it other than it seemed like it was a lil harder to start at a cold start but thats it, no biggy. i am thinking about cutting my cat and running straight pipes on it, cause i want it louder.

The less restrictions on your engine the better, to a point. Scott, Putting straight pipes on your Ram in place of the glass packs will not do much besides for make it louder. Glass packs are already pretty unrestrictive so you wont notice any gains. On the other hand, if you had a muffler that you took off you will gain MPG and power.

Be careful, if you don't have enough back pressure you will lose low-end power. Also, you may trip a code when you take off the Cat because of the O2 sensor, you may need to get an O2 sensor simulator.
