Message: I tow a 2400lb boat with my R/T with no problems. You could go with a lower gear to help with towing on your 5.2. 4.10 gears or maybe even 4.56s if ya want to get really radical. I have a set of 4.56s waiting to go on my R/T. Some of the programmers out now have tow settings that help some too.

Message: i have a 1999 R/T and i tow all sorts of stuff. I did install some air lift helper springs in the rear because the factory R/T springs are kinda weak but now it has no problems. I've towed a full size 3/4 ton B-van on a two axle car hauler with no problems at all besides some devcrease in fuel milage. I also use it to haul wood every year since i have owned it.

Message: Why is the R/T rated so low on towing? Is it because of the tires? I don't get it. It has all the big truck goodies and it has the extra rear stability due to the 18mm sway bar in the back. They also come with the extra heavy duty service group and the external transmission oil cooler. So why do they rate this thing at 2000lb? I know I could easily tow 8,000lbs. My 4.7L struggled with 3,000lbs and it was rated for 6,700?. What's up with that?

Message: The R/T is only lowered 1". When they first introduced the 98R/T the brochure said something like 6,400lbs. I know this because I bought a 98R/T. Then later that year they lowered the tow rating with no explanation.
The Lightning got lowered. It didn't loose 4000lbs of towing capacity.

Message: The R/T is lowered one inch, and it has the 9 1/4" differential vs the standard 8". With that combination the tow rating was lowered, but it will tow more than 2000lbs easily. Damn lawyers.

Message: This is called Chevy-it reasoning. This is what they teach Chevy Engineers:
1) Lowering the R/T 1" reduces the towing capacity 4000lbs
2) Therefore a 4x4 setting 1" higher can tow 4000lbs more
Hey, it makes sense to Chevy-its.

Don't you just love getting these Chevy guys going? NOT!!!
Brian, it's unfortunate that you were on this thread. Had I paid any attention as to who was making the replies I would not have made the Chevy wise cracks because I really can't stand cry babies and that's all you are. I was reading the replies without noticing who was making them. I'm trying to get information on DODGE Dakotas. I paid to be a member on this Forum. With all due respect, why don't you show the moderator of this forum some respect and pay the guy $30.00. I've only been on here 3 weeks and I have paid up. You never have anything positive to say. The free ride is up. Pay-up or shut-up........
I know you are misserable owning a Dodge because you are a Chevy Man, but spare us. PLEASE!

Now Wow, you hurt my feelings. As*holes smell really bad. I think I might cry. BOOHOOO....HOOO!
Can we get back on the subject here? Does anyone have a logical explanation as to why they rated the R/T so low on towing. We know height isn't the issue because , as R/TBlues pointed out, the Lightning was lowered and it barely lost any of it's tow capacity. The Lightning doesn't have the standard 3/4ton engine under the hood like the R/T does.

Message: I think we are all thinking of two different towing terms. The R/T can probably tow (as in a trailer) heavy loads the 5.9 360 can't hurt although the 3.92 gears are not ideal.
The 2000 pound limit is how much the R/T can tow in the bed. Ride height would matter. The bumpstops on a stock height R/T are only about 2 inches from the axel so 2000 pounds might have you riding very close or on the rear axel.
I'm not sure how the Lightning’s are rated so high even after being lowered.

Message: When the R/T was first produced it was rated as much as a regular dakota, 6700lbs or something. I read somwhere that there were some lawsuits because of false advertisment of the tow rating shortly after the R/T came out. They can't tow as much because of the lowered suspension and different shocks. I tow a boat with mine that weighs about 2500lbs. It pulls it good but the ass end sags quite a bit. I can't imagine towing 6700lbs with it.

Message: If the payload capacity has been lowered, then the allowable tounge weight has to be reduced. If so, your tow rating goes down accordingly.
As an aside, I thought it was something about a lighter duty driveline in the R/T? Years ago I seem to recall (and maybe incorrectly) that they use an aluminum driveshaft that isn't up to towing duty. True/false?

Message: Hmmmm. Never paid any attention to the drive shaft. Might have have to crawl under and look. I know the brochure I looked at in 1998 said 6,???lbs. Then they changed it.
Also, the 2000lbs is not the payload. The last Dakotas to get a 2000lb payload were the Gen2's. They could be optioned with the heavy-duty-suspension package. The Gen3's are only rated for 1330lbs MAXIMUM payload.
