 Subject: v6 to v8 swap

i have a 1990 dakota with the 3.9 v6. i'm wanting to put a 318 in it. it has a 5 speed manual tranny. what i am curious about is if the 318 will bolt up to my tranny? any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. thanks to all.

I'm NO "gearhead" ,but I'm pretty sure you need to buy a V8 tranny to go with it.I don't even think it'll bolt up right. Plus it prob. won't be able to deal with the power of a v8 compared to the v6. hope i helped a little!

Yes, the tranny will bolt up. Remember, the V6 is essentially a cut-down 318 (that's a very over-simplified way to look at it, but they share most parts). However, the strength issue comes into the works. It'd hang together if you drove like Grandpa, but any real hp, coupled with spirited driving would tear it up. Best to get a later model that was offered with a Magnum V8.

i'm not looking to do any drag racing with the dakota and other than the engine having alot of miles and almost no oil presure it is a dream to drive so i kinda hate to get rid of it and i have the 318 to put in it, just didn't want to have it all tore down just to find it wouldn't work. thank you for the info. anybody else that has any advice or ideas i would love to hear them.

Just to clarify: What I meant by getting a later model was getting a later model tranny that came with the Magnums. That way you'd have the internal beef to last. I got to looking at it and it looks like I was saying to get a later-model truck.

I put a 95 V8 in a 92 with a V6 and standard tranny.You need new harnesses and main comp.The original fan probably wont fit (didnt for me) so prob need a elec fan.Oil pan,pump,pick-up also.
