 Subject: shifting question

I am thinking of buying a 98 4x4 with 5.2 liter v8. When I drove it yesterday it was difficult to get it into 1st gear. The guy who ownes it said that he puts it in second gear first, then he's able to slip it into first gear w/ease. He said it's always been that way. So I'm wondering if anybody else has had this experience w/their Dakota and if not what the problem might be.

problem with the clutch maybe ? I had an eclipse that was doing that and it turned out to be the clutch. May not be the answer but at least give you somewhere to start ?

checked the price of a clutch lately? Hope its a good deal. if you want it go for it, but do the clutch your self.
