Message: Are you asking what the difference between 1.6 and 1.7 rockers is, or what the difference is between the packages you mentioned?

Message: The 1.7 rollers will give you about the same advantage as swapping in a R/T cam. The cam is cheaper, but the rockers are easier to install.
For first timers, I would go for the M1, 1.7 rockers, headers, PCM upgrade/flash, 2 cases of beer, and one weekend. That should knock a full second off your 1/4mile for about $1,200.00.
How many miles does she have?
If she already has over a 100K then replace the water pump while your under the hood. Since you have the front of the engine off for the pump install, remove the radiator and have it boiled out. Since you have the pump and the radiator out of the way, go ahead and install a double roller timing chain. Well hell, since you have the timing chain removed, the intake and rockers removed, go ahead and drop in that R/T cam. Then call in sick Monday and Tuesday to pick up your radiator and recover from your hangover and go do some test runs. No one will be suspicious when they hear you drive up Wed. morning. All that for about $2K. Did I get carried away?

Message: Going with 1.7's will increase the specs of whatever cam you have, but then you have to look back at the cam anyway if you're still not happy with the results. Keep in mind that with 1.6's, you have a gross valve lift number of .432 with the 318. By going to 1.7's, this lift number goes to .459. This will help the engine breathe, and this means more HP. Not bad for a bolt-on. However, the stock cams are still very EPA-oriented. The lobes have very mild ramping...very pedestrian. If you start with a better cam (like the MP Magnum RT package) you'll have a much better foundation to build on. This particular cam pulls hard throu 6000 rpm. It's more than just lift figure, it's also the ramping profile and lobe separation, etc. Keeping in mind that moving to those 1.7's, you'll really need better springs as well. The new cam package will have matching springs to manage the greater lift figures. If, down the road, you feel the need for a bit more upper rpm power, you can still pop in the 1.7's. If you're happy with the cam, upgrade to roller 1.6's. Basically, the increased ratio rockers will improve what's there, but cannot fully correct the weaknesses of the stock cam.
