You could draft real close to big semis on the highway. You should be in the mid 20s or higher that way!

A more reasonable anser would be

1)K&N intake kit
2)cat back exhaust (gibson)
3)wrap your fuel rails w/insulating tape (cheep)
4)insulate your heat shield to keep out hot engine compartment air.

Remember... cold dense air makes more power, so the cooler the air while driving easy should = more mpg. Wrapping the fuel rail will prevent any heat soak... = cooler, denser fuel.

Tow it.

The 5.9L is the biggest gas hog I've ever driven. I've owned 3 different carborated big block engined cars and all 3 got better gas mileage than my 2000R/T gets. That was with 60's and 70's technology. All 3 ran as fast or faster than my R/T also. Of course, the speed limit was 55mph back then. I suppose if I drove 55mph my R/T might get better gas mileage than the 3 big-block cars I had.

I've seen posts by Larry and others here saying cold intake for HP but hot intake for gas mileage. Will somebody please clear this up once and for all?

BTW, I understand how the IAT sensor affects timing and fuel, that's not my question.

Cold air for more power - gives a denser air charge, meaning more air which allows more fuel and therefore more power.

Warm air means lower density so you need to pull in a larger volume of air. To do this the throttle is open farther which gives you less throttling losses and getter MPG.

Low restriction intake -no difference. People assume that at low restriction intake gives better MPG but it won't. As you reduce the restriction of the air filter this allows more air through giving more power. But since you only need the same amount of power to go down the road either way, you have to adjust for the low air filter restriction by closing the throttle slightly to get back to the same total restiiction needed to make X power. Same total restriction gives same losses which gives the same MPG.

Ted,
Your right. Those people are still thinking of the old cars with carbs. It has no effect on gas mileage with a PCM controlled Fuel Injected engine. On the old carborated engines a dirty filter would act like a mechanical choke and cause increased vacuum across the venturis. This would cause a rich fuel mixture and consequently increase fuel consumption. On fuel injected ingines you have a mass-air-flow sensor and O2 sensors that send signals to the PCM and the PCM adjust the air/fuel ratio accordingly. If the engine pulls less air due to a clogged air filter the PCM simply cuts back on the amount of fuel. That's why the Tornado is such a joke. The only reason you would see increased fuel mileage with a Tornado is because it is restricting the air flow so much. Sense the engine is recieving less air the PCM is cutting back on the fuel. There should be a class action law suit against the manufacturer of the Tornado.
