Message: I always thought Dodge copied the Jeep Comanche when they made the Dakota. They are nearly the exact same size. In 1987 Dodge buys out Jeep/AMC........1987 the Dakota appears. Just a thought. Does anyone know if the Dak was derived from the Comanche?

Message: No, the Dak wasn't derived from the Comanche. The Comanche was derived from the Cherokee. The Jeeps were and are unibody vehicles and the Dodge is a body on frame vehicle. I seriously doubt that Chrysler would aquire AMC/Jeep and then develop the Dakota and release it the same year. Even if they had copied the Comanche, to design and put into production a vehicle with totally different exterior and interior would have taken more that a few months. I think AMC/Jeep wasn't doing very well and Chrysler decided to aquire the company because they saw potential in the only division that was selling vehicles (Jeep). The Dakota was already planned and it was just coincidence that it was released the same year as the AMC/Jeep purchase.

Spelling is not your forte, is it?
I sense a great deal of hostility from you.
Perhaps you drive an S10 with a 4 cylinder.
I'm sure you do think that is fast...
Now back to your S10 boards little man.

Message: Pittdawg, 56040312ad is the flash to update the
PCM for an "erroneous dtc set for P0456, P0442 for an EVAP leak. it does not turn your trans into a 5-45RFE. the trans controller has a totally different part number.

Message: The Comanche and Dakota were out at about the same time. Whichever one was more accepted by the public would stick around..the other to never be heard from again. Unfortunately the Comanche did not survive...those were great trucks..but have since gone the way of another great vehicle..the Cherokee. Gone. Forever. I just wish they couldve made the Dakota, Comanche, and Cherokee. But they didnt. Oh well.

Message: I see nothing wrong with having a HEMI in a Jeep. Jeep and AMC always had some Dodge parts in them like the 727 and 906 transmissions back in the 70's. I would rather have a Hemi Grand Cherokee than that bug-eyed thing they call a Durango.

Message: Is this thread still going? Why is it viewed as unjust to have a 5.7L Hemi engine in a Chrysler product? Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge are merely different divisions of the same company. Get a clue, 03SXT!
'84 was the first the first year of the XJ platform, most companies have some problems with the 1st year of a new model. They're getting better though, nowadays they drive around test mules with prototypes of the new systems that will be incorporated into a future vehicle.
I'm not sure the XJ platform had a Grand Cherokee in '84. If not, then you had the old fullsized Wagoneer?
I had an '89 Cherokee and really enjoyed it. Power, economy, great handling and decent room. The only complaints I had were insufficient NVH prevention and fit/finish quality lagged behind many domestics and imports. My .02 worth!
