Subject: Power Steering gone south for the winter IP: Logged
Message: Anybody else have this problem???
I've got a 2000 Dakota QC 4x4 with the 4.7 and the 45RFE auto trans.
This year it is at it worst...(the power steering, that is) - it refuses to work when I first start the truck up, and then grudgingly begins to start helping me turn the wheel....but it cuts out entirely at random intervals and forces me to get into a wrestling match with the steering wheel in parking lots.
I checked the fluid, and it is full.
Is there any kind of recall on the steering? Or something that can be done to improve it? It really does seem to be getting worse....the truck has about 91,000 miles on it now.
Hope somebody has some light to shed on this! Thanks Dakota Forum....

Message: Does it make any noise? There's basically 2 parts, the pump and the rack and either can fail. The racks have been a bit of a weak link in the past so I would suspect that before the pump but don't count the pump out either.

Message: The only noise I've heard out of it has been a whine it made yesterday morning for about five seconds right when I started the truck up. It sounded like what my older mopars sound like when the power steering reservoir goes dry....but I just checked the fluid level, and it is right where it should be. I've checked it both hot and cold, it lines up where it should for both temperature settings.
Like I said, it is COLD lately! It was zero degrees yesterday morning when I went to start up and I heard the five seconds of a whine. Today, its a bit warmer (10 or 12?) and there was no noise out of it. It still didn't work right, either. Could the fluid be so cold that its gotten like maple syrup in there, and isn't flowing? I'm puzzled.
What kind of noise would I hear out of it if the steering rack had gone bad?
Thanks....!!!

Message: If your power steering is making a wining noise it is mostlikely the pump, i had the same problemo. Only solution is replace the pump. not that hard of a job i had to do so. 1997 Dakota 5.2 5-speed club cab 4x4
