Subject: 92 5.2 sputtering at running speeds IP: Logged
Message: I am currently having troubles w/ my 92 dakota w/5.2 litre. The truck starts and idles fine but at running speeds (it can be any speed) the truck has a tendency to cut out like it is losing fuel, but then it will "pop" a bit and accelerate. It seems to do it more when i get to the top of a hill and let off the gas.
When it happens I need to lay on the gas or back off otherwise it will almost completely stall out, but it never completely stalls. Please guys and ideas???

Message: How many miles on your truck? How many miles since a good tune up. The stock ignition wires caused a cutout on my 92 5.2. It's possible your O2 sensor is going or gone bad. They should be replaced every 60,000 miles on the GEN 2 trucks.

Message: THE TRUCK HAS 127000 ON IT. WHERE DO I FIND THE O2 SENSOR ON THAT TRUCK?

Message: It's located in the exhaust you will plug with a couple of wires connected to it.

Message: Replace your in-line fuel filter under the truck below the drivers seat.

Message: My 92 had similar problems when the fuel pump started to go. I was having problems when driving on level ground also.
Next time you have troubles, shut the truck off and check the fuel pressure in the rails by pressing the shraeder valve. (Watch out as fuel should squirt out at 45psi if everything is working right.) When my pump went I wouldn't get any pressure in the rails.
The filter would be a cheap and easy replacement and place to start.

Message: EBL, CAN YOU EXPLAIN THIS PROCESS TO ME W/ A BIT MORE DETAIL? FUEL IN THE RAILS? SHRAEDER VALVE?
THANKS

Message: tim there will 8 fuel injectors (NOT looking at sparkplugs i assume you know what they are) on top of each set of injectors will be a common tube connecting them to fuel, usually a steel tube running the length of the engine just at the bottom of the intake manifold. this is the fuel rail one one each side of the intake manifold. now somewhere on one of the fuel rails there will be what looks like a valve stem (to put air in tires) sometimes with a black plastic cap, this is the shreader valve its a fuel pressure test port. now with the fuel system presurized (key in the ON position) press the littel button in the center of the valve, as mentioned eariler there will be approx 40 psi..... enough to spray you in the eye if your not careful
when you turn the ignition on (without starting) you should also be able to hear the fuel pump in the tank kick in to build presure it should only take a few seconds then shut off til the engine is started, holding a steady pressure
give that a try

Message: jd pretty much sums it up. The valve is on the driver's side on my truck.
It's actually a pretty easy trouble shoot. If you don't have pressure in the rails, go to the next bottle neck postition in the fuel system... the filter. If the filter is clear (you can blow air through it, it is the pump.
(If the fuel filter is clear, you should still replace it. It is cheap and you don't want to have to go back to fix the problem later. Watch out as the fuel is pressureized here too!)

Message: GUYS, THANKS FOR THE INFO. I DID CHECK THE PRESSURE AND THERE IS NONE. JUST A TRICKLE OF GAS CAME OUT. I JUST REPLACED THE FUEL FILTER TWO WEEKS AGO SO CAN I ASSUME IT IS THE PUMP? IT THERE A DEFINITE WAY TO CHECK THIS AS I REMEMBER PUTTING ONE OF THESE IN MY LAST DAKOTA AND IT RAN ME NEARLY $400.

Message: Pumps are expensive. When I replaced mine I think it was around 300. The dealer wanted around 400.
If you do a search on dropping your tank and changing your fuel pump you will find numerous examples on how people have accomplished this most fun task. I dropped the tank (not fun as the fuel tank was (of course) full of around 20 gallons of fuel. The other way I've heard of people changing them is to remove the bed.
