Subject: TPS, Cvtr lockup, other...??

Hi -

I'm trying to solve a problem in my 99 Dak with a 318 and automagic tranny. In top gear I get this shutter that makes the r's climb a few hundred and then it comes back down. It's very soft though and not abrupt at all. Sometimes it will jog back and forth like this a bunch like it's confused.

I have taken a few trips in areas where it acts up more then others... ie. highways. The truck does it most often when on cruise control. It still does it when I am driving with C/C off, but not as often.

I'm thinking it's the torque converter going in and out of lockup, but honestly I don't know. I had someone hook the truck up to a diagnostic tranny computer and there were no faults reported. We drove around a bit but it never did the problem either, so I don't know if that matters?

Since it seems like it's happening only in light throttle applications, could the TPS be reporting wrongly and the converter doesn't know what to do? Could the converter's lockup controller be hiccuping? Since I'm not even positive that it is the lockup, is there a way to disconnect the lockup feature; pull a connector, etc., so I can drive around and see if there's no problem?

Some ideas would be VERY much appreciated. I tried the rotor indexing procedure I found online, (since it happens at like 2K rpm) and that didn't make a difference.

Thanks in advance for some helpful ideas and/or answers :-)
