Subject: Clutch work: Pilot Bearing IP: Logged
Message: The past few weeks, my truck was making some serious squeeling noises when I pushed the clutch in. Thought it was either the throwout bearing or the pilot bearing. Pissed me off since I had just put a new clutch in less than 30K mi. ago. Anyhow, I tore the whole thing apart and sure enough, it was the $10 pilot bearing (lot of work for a little P.O.S.). Was reading in the Haynes manual about making sure the seal on the pilot bearing faces the tranny. Compared the old and new bearings, and THE OLD BEARING NEVER HAD A SEAL IN IT! As a result, all the grease had come out of the bearing and the rollers were pitted and rusted. Luckily, I didn't let it go long enough as to damage the tranny input shaft. But the shaft also had no grease on it and was slightly polished.
Just writing this to help everybody learn from my mistake. Don't just blindly take the bearing the parts store gives you, make sure you check it out. If it's supposed to have a seal, there's prob a reason for it. I'm just glad I can do this work myself, other wise that would have been two trips to the shop in a year and a half with a hefty bill attached to each.
