Subject: THERMOSTAT Problems

Message:
I own a 98 Dak 4x4 up in cold northern, Mi. The problem is that even when my truck gets warmed up the gauge on the dash says 140. I can drive for two hours and it stays the same. The vehicle interior gets warm but not too warm.. Any suggestions besides changing the stat??? Also how hard is it to change.

Could be a stuck STAT - I have a 97 5.2 v8 - the stat gasket was leaking once and that wasn't a problem to change - it's right on top on the v8- should be less than $10 at a parts store and should take more than a few minutes to change.

I just put a 180 tstat in today (stock is 195.) If you hace a 9/16 socket/ratchet and a few extensions, gasket scraper, new tstat/and seal it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. I started with a traditional gasket scraper, but then opted to use a wire cup brush in my drill to clean off the old gasket from the block and thermostat housing.

I didn't ask what engine you have, or if you know it the thermostat was original. the 5.2 has it right on top. A stock 195 degree is probably best for way up north. I live in Cali so I can get away with changing mine. Also I give this advise with caution, but give it none the less. you can cover up part or all of the grill, if it's really cold out, this will restrict the air flow through the radiator, and engine bay. don't do this unless its really cold, and then monitor the temp, if the truck starts getting hot uncover it. A few years ago the thermostat in my 66 mustang broke and was stuck wide open. it couldn't heat up at all, then I got some snow packed in the grill and it heated up real nice.
