Message: Mine has 30000 and I've changed the oil a few times and had to put gas in it. Tows great and runs like a scalded dog. Awd is great in the snow and mud and makes towing easy with the 5spd auto. Get everything heavy duty you can.

Message: 4.7 issues are few and far between but here they are. Keep in mind that these problems can vary from engine to engine but the amount of these problems reported make these legitimate issues.
1. Engine idle problem. Engine idle motor/controller might need to be replaced. Idle'ing rpms dip below a smooth operating level at a stop.
2. Air conditioning. Virtually all dodges have the problem with the drain hose getting clogged and the condensor filling with water until it rots out and blows up the blower motor. Fix: have your drain hose cleaned at least twice a year, more if you use your air/defoggers than usual. Nip this problem in the bud before it costs you $1000 or more in repairs.
3. MPG drops. A lot of 4.7 owners lose 30 to 60 miles per tank depending on mods and local weather. This mileage drop is permanent and usually takes about 3 months to a year to develop. It is a sudden drop.
4. Upper ball Joints. These things will break and need to be replaced but this is a problem on all 2000-04 Dakotas. Get them done at 40,000 miles and let the warranty handle it.
5. 4X4 Dakotas Tire Wear. For some odd reason 4x4 Daks eat up tires like a ethopian at a buffet. If you don't honestly need a 4x4 don't get one. Get limited slip, and ABS and call it good for city/country road/highway. If you are a true offroad enthusiast then pay up. Average life on your first set of Wrangler offroad tires factory, is about 30,000 to 40,000 miles.
6. 3.55 axle clunk on 4x2 Autos. On average, you will get about 30k on your dak before this happens. Its a combinational problem dealing with the tranny and diff. It causes a noticable clunk in the rear end when lightly accelerating then idling from the 30mph to 40 mph range.
Hope this wasn't too much of a downer for you but I figure you asked. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Message: i have a 2000 4.7 with all most 40k on it and i have had to replace the clutch fan when i bought it at around 29k. one time it started to run and idle rough, i took it to the dealer ship and they reprogramed the computer and that fixed that problem. i noticed that it is a pain in the A$$ to change the oil. If the 03s setups the same be prepared to have oil run all down ur arms

Message: Mr sleepy,
were those your experiences with it?
NOT MINE!
Andrew,
After the 'death flash' you got, did you notice a drop in MPG, and overall HP and torque? Cause that's how it got fixed. And, Clutch/fan, you mean yours is still on your engine? What a waste of good, free hp.
In all honesty, my 5spd (the REAL one)was repaced under warranty, for some difficult 3rd gear shifts, for free of course, no probs since.
MOst likely, your getting an auto, probably the most issues with that, but still probably a good tranny.
Can't beat the reliability, HP/Torque per C.I., from the 4.7!

Message: #5-not true. Goin on 87000 miles, rotated tires about every 7000 miles, and the original tires still have tons of tread left. Surprises me too. I am going in for maintenance at around 100,000 miles and the tires should last until then and then they will get replaced. And yes, they are the stock wrangler rt/s.
#3-MPG drop?? The only time I had that was when I tinkered with trying to improve the airflow, which you can't.
#1-purrs like a kitten, always has. Teaxs Todd, must be the AMSOIL we use. Oh god, I shouldn't have said that....
2002 QC 4x4 Sport Plus, 4.7L, auto, Patriot Blue, Tire & Handling group, Heavy Duty Service group, Leer cap w/out windows, Mopar Step bars and roof rack, Rhino liner in bed and on step bars, Pace Edwards Power Tailgate lock 3.55 rear, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, all possible fluids are AMSOIL

Message: The idle issue may have something to do with the idle-air solenoid. The 00-02 might just have a crappy design. On the '03s and up the 4.7 got a new solenoid setup. This also effects aftermarket throttle bodies, cuz you cant fit them unless they are made for a 03 setup

Message: This is NOT a flame starter post, but I have to question #5 on Mr. Sleepy's list. For an all terrain tire on a light truck if you get 40k off a set of tires then that is honestly not too bad. Depending on how you drive it/rotate tires, etc, you could get more, or less. But GENERALLY, I would NOT refer to getting 40k from a set of AT tires to be "eating them up"...

Message: I'm pretty happy w/mine so far.
1. Nice smooth idle. At all times, w/ or w/out the a.c./defrost. No drop from the stop.
2. I think there are about 12 Dodges right now in my extended family, the oldest is 15yrs, my little Dak is 10mos. None of us have even heard of this prob w/ the drain hose and condenser, let alone had it happen.
3. I average 17+ mpg in warm weather, right now in minus degrees of winter and much 4WD, my last two tank fill-ups were 15+ mpg. I pull a horse trailer (4200lbs. loaded up) and Scooter (I'm a girl, yes this is my truck's name) gets 12-14 mpgs, depending on hills, etc. The best mileage I have gotten is 22 mpg. (no trailer, obviously). I have written down every tankful I've put in since I bought my truck new (it's getting to be a thick little book!). I don't rely on the computer. I have no mods on the truck, and it has 28k at 10 months on it. My '98 Ram 1500 w/145K still gives a decent 15+ mpgs. The only time any of us had a sudden mpg. drop was when my brother poked a hole in his fuel tank.
4. I'm waiting to see what happens (and when) here. Should I just go ahead and replace them with ones that can be greased? The truck goes in for regular maintainance (I have free lifetime oil and tire rotation, so I'm there every 5-6 weeks). So far so good.
5. My tires are the original Wranglers, w/ 28K on them now, and I'm actually using them as my winter tires. They're rotated on a regular basis (I put tiny little marks on them, so I can tell if the guys really are rotating them, they are).
Still wearing great, no problems here. Lots of traction.
6. I have 3.92s on a 4x4, so I'm no help here, sorry.
This is my truck-
2003 Dakota- QC SLT+, 4.7, 3.92 5spd auto/OD, Limited Slip, ABS, Deluxe Power & Convenience Groups, HD Service Group (Engine, PS, Trans cooling), Trailer tow. Grey w/silver.
Extras- Line-X OTR, Westin step bars (Line-Xed), shields and visors, Acess tonneau, full sheepskin seat covers, cargo gate.
