BALL JOINT COMPLAINTS!

This sounds like the problem I am starting to relize, as it gets worse, with my 98. It didn't start till about 6 months ago. Figured it was just under normal use since I have about 100k on it. Should I be concerned that these need to be changed out?

One question about this ball joint problem. I have 2000 dakota and need to have ball joint replaced at 45000 miles on it, I know its better to replace both sides at the same time but due to cash flow problems Is it ok to replace one side then replace the other side within a few weeks
thanks

BTW I am goint to nhtsa.dot. gov RIGHT now once i just post this

Yeah you can replace them one at a time. If a shops doing it, great they will align the truck when replacing the joint. If your doing them it's going to cost you since you need to have the front end aligned after replacing a ball joint.

If you don't align the front end and the new ball joint puts the front end into a different alignment, you might be looking at a new set of tires along with the ball joints.

I also have a loud squeak and bump when I make a deep turn at slow speed on a dirt road. At first it seemed like I was turning too deeply, but after seeing all of this and looking at the angle of the turn, it has to be mechanical in the front steering, i.e. the ball joints. I have the supplemental warranty for my 2001 4x4 Dakota Quad Cab SLT Plus and the 7/70 is still in effect. I love the vehicle and yet for the same money a person should get a better vehicle. I hope this works as a complaint to the ntsb. If not how is that done? Thank You, Hank

The Dakota may have one problem right now, but even that is far ahead of a lowly rice burner. The simple problem will be repaired and all will be fine. You have a bigger problem though and one that should always be remembered, real Americans drive American. Remember "December 7, 1941, a day that will live in infamy."

Just log on to w ww.nhtsa.dot.gov/ the site there will walk you thru the procedure.. and yes we will (at least some of us) remember that day.
In a fireside chat, on September 11,1941, sixty years to the day, Franklin Delano Roosevelt founded the doctrine of pre-emptive war for our country.."When you see a rattlesnake poised to strike, you dont wait for it to bite!"...referring to the German u-boat attacks.War orders for the U>S>S> Greer were given six months before Pearl Harbor.

If your ball joints don't have grease fittings you will have problems... Sealed ball joints are never really totaly sealed. It really sucks they went cheap on the ball joints.. But I still love my 03 R/T.

I'm probably jinxing myself here, but here it goes....

What are you doing to your trucks to wear out the ball joints so fast? I've never had this problem. I drive on really sh!ty roads. Memphis sucks! I typically don't keep anything past warranty. That's usually 36K and then I trade. I hear all these people replacing balljoints at 10k, 15k, 20k, etc..... I'm on my 6th Dakota. I drive the hell out of them.

There is one thing I do NOT do that I think everyone else is doing. I do not turn my wheels LOCK-TO-LOCK. When I'm in a parking lot I only turn my wheels 3/4 turn to make my turn-ins into parking spaces. I have always thought that turning the wheels all the way put extra stress on the entire front end. Also, I do not hit bumps with the wheels turned. I make sure that my steering wheel is straight when I go over bumps. There must be something I'm doing different than everybody else because I've never had a ball joint go out in a Dakota. I have my tires rotated and front end inspected/aligned every 15,000 miles. If I add up all my Dakota miles it's well over 200,000.

Dude, if you've never had anything past the warranty you've never held a truck long enough to get to the time frame where people typically begin to see ball joint problems. Heck, youve probably never held a truck long enough to get to the point where you see ANY problems. It's an actual concern though for those of us who like to drive a vehicle into the ground and get our money's worth.

My driver's side balljoint went out at 29,000 miles. I use this truck for it's intended purpose -- hauling lumber onto a construction site a couple times a month. Moving my furniture to my new house in the bed and on a 14' utility trailer ... things like that ... nothing real severe, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna buy a $31k truck and then baby the hell out of it just because Dodge is too cheap to put decent parts into it. Oh well .. take the good with the bad.
