Message: I own an '89 4x4 w/210k, a '94 4x4 w/165k (when sold 2 years ago), a '99 4x4 w/80k, and a '02 4x2 w/36k -- so I think I can comment on what Dak owners should expect . . .
The only one that had the "ball joint issue" was the '02, as they were replaced at 35k. The others all seemed to need ball joints around 100k. I don't fault the joints specifically -- the ball joints were just one of many front end problems that showed up around 100k. So my overall preception is that Dak front ends are a little on the weak side.
I suspect that with proper factory lube OEM joints (w/o zerks) would last to around 100k. The "new" ball joint problems seem to be much more dramatic -- and if the rumors are correct, caused by a lack of lubrication.
One last though: I've always replaced mine with Moog joints -- which seem much more "long-lived" than the originals.
