your truck is just breaking in. sounds to me you need a good tune up. did you try to do the onboard diagnostics to see if the computer gives you a code? thats the beauty of new technology. we don't have to buy $300 worth of parts to make a repair to try to guess whats wrong by proccess of elimination. almost sounds like you have a bad wire or distributor cap though. well thats my 2 cents hope it helps

While you are doing the tune up, peer down the TB to see if the Belly Pan gasket is letting oil onto the intake. If the bad milage has come on all at once this may be your culpret.

I had a '98 and around that mileage I encountered a clogged catalytic converter. I spend several dollars on new "tune-up" components only to find that it was the cat. My milage suffered and lost power, so that's another direction to go.

As far as the shifter is concerned, that's just wear on the shifter causing the vibration. Mine did the same thing, even after replacing the transmission. If it would make you feel better check the fluid in the tranny and see if it's in need of changing or if there is debris in the fluid.

YOYO: Check your O2 sensor or sensors if their is more than one. They start causing the exact symptoms you describe, loss of power, poor gas mileage and ruff idle. The ruff idle could be IAT sensor on the back side of the Throttle-body as you face the engine compartment.

I had similiar problems with my 98 and it turned out I needed a tune up. The problems were very bad when it was wet... a new distributor, wires and plugs and everything was cool.

Problems I've had thus far:

3 sets of ball joints (2 sets replaced by dealer under warrenty)
fuel pump failure @ 32,000
needed tune up @ 55,000
clogged cat @ 61,000
anti-freeze leaking @ 67,000 (this is as of yesterday)

i also had your problem yoyo. same symptoms as rough idle, too high idle, bad mileage. mine turned out to be $168 solenoid(IAC motor). some technology is good, some technology can rape your wallet. also replace 02 sensor(that gave me over 100 extra miles on gas), and other sensors, as well as tune-up.

I've got a '99 with a little over 80k on it - Rear wheel cylinders around 65K - a water pump around 77K - an intake manifold gasket (under warrenty) - and a couple of sensors at aound 40K.
Right now I've got leaky valve covers, and I need to replace the ball joints - Anyone else have a 318 that runs dirty? I'm pretty good about coolent flushes, but I've never had anything that ran this dirty
