Subject: HELP! R/T trouble.... IP: Logged
Message: My '99R/T has only 25K on it. It sits in the garage all winter(5 months). I've never had any problems with it. It's been very cold here as well. Yesterday, I started it and noticed it had a slight knock and then it seemed it cleared up. I let it idle for a few minutes and noticed it was kinda knocking again. It then stalled after only running for 5 min. Just died. Now, it just cranks over but will not start. It's got 3/4 tank of gas. All fluids are full. No dash lights. Everything "seems" fine. Has anyone had anything like this happen to their vehicle, most notibly their R/T? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Message: How long has it been sitting? What kind of fuel is in the tank? For starts you should unhook the battery and bring it inside when you park it for the winter. If it is not in a controled temp garage you could have condensation in the tank. Gas also has a shelf life and can go bad from sitting. That could explain your knock. Also if your one of those guys who uses heavy oil like 20/50 or 10/40 and its real cold the oil gets real thick at low temp and takes a bit to get through the pump.

Message: theres a few things you can do and a friend.
1-pull the coil wire from the dist cap and hold it about a 1" from a good ground to see if it jumps fire across the gap,[have some one turn the motor over using the keys] if you have fire then move on.
2-on the fuel rail theres a valve[something like a tire valve] first cycle the key on for a few seconds then off, depress the valve [keeping your face away]theres should be gas spray out under fairly high pressure,if not fuel pump or fuel regulator.
3-it may have just flooded it,s self with too much gas,let it set awhile and it should restart,
probaly why you can smell gas in the oil.
change the oil.
4-the temp sensor may be faulty and giving the pcm the wrong reading causing it to give the motor more fuel than needed.
5-run the fault codes
6-may have been a lifter making the knocking/ticking noise just from setting so long.
hope this helps

Message: Vern,
Well, drained the oil and the fuel odor was really strong. My next step will be to check the coil. Where's the temp sensor? I figure that the fuel pressure is there- hence the fuel draining into the oil pan. I'll have to check everything tomorrow. It's gotten to late and I get up at 5am. Thanks very much for your help and let me know if you have any more suggestions. Thanks man.

Message: If your oil smells that strong of fuel you either cranked the hell out of it and had no ignition or you have a faulty fuel pressure regulator. Also it has been my experience that once the spark plugs fuel foul you might as well throw them away and get new ones or it will never start. Pull one and see if it is wet. One other possibility is that your Cat is bad. Dodges are known for the cat breaking apart and knocking (rattling) and blocking the exhaust.

Message: The coolant temp sensor is right next to the thermostat houseing kinda behind the alternator. That Vern dude has a pretty good process that should get your truck running. You usually can tell if the temp sensor is screwed up if your gauge reads hot when obviously your truck is not. If you have fuel (check the schrader valve like vern said) and you have spark the engine should run. I am a chrysler service tech and not a whole hell of alot goes wrong with these engines. If you have fuel and spark try holding your foot to the floor on the gas pedal and turn it over. The controllers are programed with a cold flood start feature that once the controller sees a T.P.S. siganl that indicates W.O.T. it shuts off the injectors. If It starts and then dies after you let off the gas pedal then i would suspect the idle speed motor (There was also a T.S.B. to reprogram certain egine controllers for cold start issues that you may have) If you truck just kinda pops and sputters it's also possible that your catalytic converter is plugged. Usually you can just unscrew the upstream o2 sensor to get them to go when that happens. Hopefully this helps some,a broken mopar aint a happy mopar.
