Message: Magnum, as it is used in reference to the 90's V8 smallblock, was a redesign/refinement of the pre-Magnum LA engines. A long-term problem was in the exhaust port with a turbulence-inducing "dog-leg" that'd stall at lifts above .500. They could be ported to improve this, but they were refined over the years. Basically, the Magnum was the next step. It was also the time at which multi-point fuel injection was introduced. This proved to be a great moment for Mopar to reclaim control of aftermarket sales for these engines by re-designing the way the intake fits to the heads. Is it any coincidence that Mopar was the only producer of heads and intakes til now? Is it also a coincidence that these engines are no longer in production? Naturally, there was a marketing push with the "Magnum" name. It was also a chance for Mopar to standardize the parts for the 318 and 360, at least as far as the heads and intake/TBI were concerned. It's nothing that couldn't have been done with the LA setup, but they wouldn't have control of things. Magnum heads are approx. 50hp right out of the box, just like the last version of the 302 LA heads. The rocker assembly was changed also. You can, however, put Magnum heads and intake on a pre-Magnum block.

Message: Umm, ScoJo, roller lifters were incorporated in the 318 passenger-car engines in 1985. The 360 followed in 1986. The Magnum 318 was released in 1992, Magnum 360 in 1993.
