Subject: break in period? IP: Logged
Message: What are some good guidelines to follow when breaking in a new vehicle?? I've always heard it's good to get the 1st oil change after around a 1000 miles or so to get rid of any metal shavings, etc. what about "setting" the brakes by doing some hard braking initially, or not going over 70 mph during the first few hundred miles?? No hard accelerations?? I ordered a Hemi Durango and want to do what's best for it. Thanks!

Message: The owner's manual covers this, and ironically, it's little changed from the early ones. It tends to say, brief full throttle accelerations within legal limits (after under way) actually contribute to a good break in. So, no stoplight romps, and nothing hard for at least the first 500 miles, after that, you get to dip into the throttle and kick in the passing gear. From what I've seen, they caution against hard braking for several hundred miles to prevent glazing the brake pads (mild braking sets them, not the hard stuff), so take it easy and go easy on the brakes. 1000 mile oil change is a good idea too.
