Subject: RE: Is the 4.7 a good engine? IP: Logged
Message: I bought a 2002 dodge Ram 1500 with a 4.7 about 3 years ago. two weeks ago I lost oil pressure while going to Houston. oil pressure would be ok for 45 seconds and drop to nothing . It had 183,000 miles on it when it went. no knocks still ran good up till then. Made the mistake of letting the garage talk me into an engine flush a couple of times and when I dropped the oil pan there was all kinds of sludge and crap in the bottom. Hell I loved the engine, Bought a used one with 32000 miles on it and plan on rebuilding the old one. I got my moneys worth out of this truck a long time ago. Ran good Towed good and had desent balls to get up and go.

Message: I have a 4.7 in my 2004.
Has 143,000 miles.
Lots of towing miles too.
Runs super.
This is one snotty little engine.
Oil changes every 3000 miles with out fail.
Had a few 318's B4 this 4.7.
All I can say is as ``the`` replacement for the 318, the 4.7 has some big shoes to fill.
So far so good.

Message: i have a 2002 dakota with the 4.7 an only have minor mods an with a lil lift an bigger tires. i have towed a 20' toy hauler with a mid-size car in it an had no problems, the lil engines a beast. i am also the local tow vehicle when people get stuck so in my opinion the 4.7 is the best engine mopar put in their truck as far as gas engines go

Message: All I can say is that where I come from, temperatures are so
low in the winter, about 90% of all vehicles will not start
unless they have a block heater installed. This truck sits
unplugged in a wind swept parking lot for 12 hours overnight,
but when I turn the key it starts every time. No vehicle
manufacturer seems to build anything able to cope with the
conditions that are every day reality up here, but I gotta say
this truck impresses me all the time.
I have been very rough with this thing. I got it second hand
from a friend who didn't take care of it at all. To top it off, its
been through 3 accidents, one with each owner. Original
engine still runs great, other than its a gas guzzler...
03 Dakota 4x4 QC SLT. Virtually zero maintenance until I got
it. Plenty has been replaced on this beater due to the
accidents. However, this doesn't change the fact that after a
hellish 180k kms, the all original 4.7l heart of this truck is still
beating.

Message: I have a 2001 dakota with a 4.7 and recently I noticed the radiator was shooting out steam through the rivets after I shut the engine off. Then I noticed when I start the truck, it revs up to about 2000 rpm before settling back down to normal. Anyone had trouble like this and/or know if this is related to the radiator??? Thanks.

Message: I have a 2001 club cab 4.7 with a manual tranny, k&n air intake, magnaflow exhaust. I have my sparkplugs gapped to .050 in. the truck has about a 110,000 miles in it. I run Amsoil synthetics in the engine, tranny and differential. With the cruise control, on at 65mph I get 25 mpg pretty consistantly. Typically
around town 16 to 17 mpg, although in heavy stop and go traffic that number has dropped to 14 mpg. At 75 mph mileage will drop to 20 mpg. this is a great running truck. I plan to keep it for a long time.

Message: We purchased our '02 Durango w/ the V8 4.7L sohc new, w/Trlr Towing Pkg. She drove it, then I took a turn using it. These days, it's back-up to our daily drivers (company vehicles), has been absolutely trouble-free, gets good, regular PM, has just rolled over 100K. Exterior taillight socket fail the only problem! Recently, began getting codes PO440, PO456. I erased them about 500 miles ago. Have other owners run across these?

Has had four operators but I am the original owner, tow a boat and

Message: I have an '02 Dakota Quad Cab SLT 4.7, 5spd, 3.55 LSD special ordered received Apr. 2002.
I now have 209,000+ miles will still burn the tires in first and second chirp in third. I put Mobil 1 in at 1000mi and ever since. Changed the LSD to TRU-LOK GEARS in the diff at 103,000. Throw-out brg was making too much noise so changed clutch assy out at 153,000. Had purchased slotted rotors and ceramic pads right after initial purchase due to warped rotor reputation and stored in my garage for over 10 years before deciding to go ahead and change them out, still had allot of pad wear left.
I put K&N FIPK kit on right away and had 3" cat back exhaust installed when truck was new. Since added Gibson ceramic coated shorty headers, Superchip tuner, Front of TB was machined out.
With an ARE toneau cover this makes for a great travel vehicle for my wife and I.
Now I'm retiring in Jan and looking at swapping the 4.7 for a 6.1 Hemi just because I want more power without going through the possibility of problems with building up the 4.7
My answer to the original ? is yes the 4.7 is a very dependable engine and highly recommend them, with the fact of running a good synthetic oil and keeping it changed. I change mine about every 4-5,000 mi.
