I have a '01 QC 4x4 (bought new in 2001) with the 4.7L and a 5 sp. manual. Truck has 78K on it and I have had no problems with engine or transmission. I did have to replace the rear LSD diff @ 59K as I broke the clutch pack backing. Covered under factory warranty. Great engine.....no problems, reliable, ample power and fun to drive. I had a 318 in a '72 Dart and it too was a great motor. I have no problem with the 318, but it was not available in Daks in '01 and I couldn't get a manual trans with the 360, so I opted for the 4.7L and a 5 speed (love having a v8 with a manual trans!). I'm very happy with my QC.

I have an 2002 with manual transmission and the engine has worked great with this hookup. Now has about 40k miles and no problems. Nice even torque curve. For good gas milage, I can run in 5th gear from 30 MPH and up.

I have a 2001 Dakota Quad cab Sport with the 4.7L and a 5-speed with over 101k miles on it. It has seen all conditions from the hot New Mexico desert to the bitter cold Chicago winters. I have never had an issue with the engine or the transmission. That is including towing a 21 foot powerboat that burnt out the auto transmission on my old mans 2500 RAM up and down the mountains of Washington state. I feel that this engine and transmission is by far the best combination that you can get on a Dakota. It handles all situations with grace and gets mid 20 MPG cruising on the highway.

Got my 4.7l ram 1500 6 speed 2 years ago. It was the truck i
wanted. Now i am not sure anymore!??! The heads had to came off
at 50 000k and now the warranty just ran out and i think there is
something wrong with it again: the gas mileage is down the drain
and the scanner says number 7 as a miss fire. I do mixed driving (i
baby it since it is my first new truck) and regular oil changes. So i
am not sure that motor is any good.

Frog, if you had a problem with your heads, then you probably just had a lemon or something caused the problem. But head problems are extremely rare on this engine.

My truck has 50+k now. Not babied like yours. I drive the truck pretty hard.

All in all not too many complaints about mechanical problems. Just mostly your typical worn IAC that causes rough idle, which is a maintenance issue, and other misc worn sensors.

Mine's been very reliable as well - can't judge an engine design on the experience of isolated problems. That can have more to do with the manufacturing process.

I have 120,000 on my 2003 4.7 dakota quad cab. approx
50,000 of that has been towing a trailer for work. (3500-5000
lb depending on load) and little or none of the miles are
expressway. I had a exhaust manifold gasket break thru but
other than that the engine purs like it's brand new. But then I
also change the oil every 3000 w/ mobil 1.

I have however manage to wear out the u-joints on my drive-
shaft and nearing the end of the 3rd set of brake pads.
(probably from towing)

all in all, my next truck will have a 4.7 or a cummins engine.

I am a certified auto mechanic that recently purchased a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a bad 4.7l engine, the same engine that is in the Dakota. The engine ran but had a very bad knock. The jeep has 248000 miles on the odometer and the last oil change (by the sticker)was aprox. 10,000 miles overdue. I pulled the engine out and took it apart and found out that it had spun the #8 cylinder rod bearing, but suprisingly to me the engine had NO SLUDGE and other than the one rod bearing the engine had no signs of wear. I can still see hone marks in the cylinders. Now to me that is unbelieveable! I DON'T know that this is the original engine but who knows???? It didn't look like anyone had ever had the engine out before. The 4.7l engine IS a good engine, and I've found that you can buy a complete engine rebuild kit online cheaper than you can buy a used engine. Rpmmachine.com $1233.69

KDF,

Thanks for the input.

When I did my HO cams, there was no signs of any sludge, etc, but I only had ~22,000 miles then.

Still runs great @ 136,000+. I do all my own oil changes (don't overlook the 4.7 is a SIX quart engine), and I think/hope it's still sludge free.

I have a 2000 4.7l dakota quad cab, I bought brand new. Well over 100,000 miles on it. I never really beleived in taking my truck to a mechanic or dealership for an oil change. I've worked on cars and trucks most of my life and I can take care of that kind stuff myself. And it seems that, by what I've read from these posts, it's been to my advantage. I haven't read any complaints from anyone who changes their own oil and uses Mobil 1 5W30(which is what the specs. say to use). I change my oil every 5000 miles and use an engine flush every other oil change, just as common practice to get rid of any oil sludge. But I do the same on all my vehicles. I use synthetic gear oil in my differentials, and do all mantainence myself. The only problem I've had is replacing a fuel pressure regulator.
My 4.7 is 8 years old and runs like it's brand new. And still looks, sounds, and performs like the bad ass truck I bought 8 years ago. I still stomp it through traffic, and even race other trucks through the the light sometimes. As a matter of fact I pulled up next to a Ford Lightning last week, and stared at his nice paint job through my rear veiw mirror all the way to the next light. The 4.7 can be a great motor or a P.O.S. But I beleive it's all due to proper mantainence.

Ok - as far as the sludging thing goes, is using something like a Wynn's engine flush an option to prevent this? http://www.wynnsusa.com/maint_engine.aspx

My original owner 2000 4x4 Club Cab with the 4.7 engine has 195K on it and is still going strong. Regular oil changes every 3-4K miles with standard multi-vis oils. No major engine work so far.
