Subject: loses power on highway IP: Logged
Message:
95 dodge dakota, v8, 2wheel drive. After running at highway speeds for 3-3.5 hours (65-70) between chicago and saint louis), it loses power, running rough, which forces me to pull off the road. I notice the engine is running rough at idle before shutting it off. After it is off for 5 minutes or so, I restart. Often it is running fine again, sometimes I need to let it cool longer. This allows me to continue driving, I keep it at 55-60mph the rest of the way (about 1-1.5 hours) and it seems to run fine. Guages all show fine, oil is clean, tranmission fluid is fine, coolant is fine.
Recent repairs over the last year were a new transmission (OEM), new radiator, and new head gaskets. This started after the new transmission.

Message: Replaced the Cat and the muffler, but have the same problem....loses power after 3 hours on the road.
We did find that stopping at half a tank and filling up prevents the problem.
On my next trip, I will plan on letting it lose power, removing the gas cap, and seeing if it is a bad gas cap???
I also put a bottle of HEAT in, just in case it was a water problem...
ideas?
