Subject: 2001 Dakota CC R/T cluster...
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,
I own a 2001 CC R/T and was wondering about the instrument cluster. A couple of weeks ago someone broke into my truck, stole my stereo, and broke my cluster doing it. I dont know why they broke my cluster, it had nothing to do with the stereo. Anyway, they cracked the clear window, broke off all of the needles, and stabbed the hell out of the digital odometer. My question is...Does the cluster have some sort of memory for the mileage? Or, does the computer save it on memory?
If the cluster saves the mileage, then I know of a junkyard selling a cluster with just about the same mileage as my truck (29,xxx).
If you must ask, I didnt have insurance on the truck. It was going to storage when this happened. So I have to bite the bullet on this.
Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure that the Computer doesn't save your mileage. I'm pretty sure if it does then as soon as you reset the computer I would think that it would erase the memory. Anyways, I think a new cluster would be just fine.

P.S. If they have a center console for bucket seats would you let me know through email. I am converting to buckets and I need the center console that goes with the bucket seats for my '01 R/T. I have been looking, but have had no luck.

Jason

Jason,
They have a 2001 White RC R/T there with black buckets and the center console. I'm assuming you have a regular cab, if so, then they have it. I'll ask how much they want for it. Where are you located? Im in Hawaii. Of course they ship parts...but buyer pays.

Again thanks for a reply.

Someone else want to confirm about the cluster? I dont want to buy a $125 cluster and not be able to use it.

the cluster saves the milage, not the computer. i'm a 100% positive on that. the cluster to my truck had some "failure" according to the dealer at 55k miles. the dealer wanted $1000 for a new one! So i just went to a junkyard and found one for my exact same year/model with 54k miles on the cluster. everything matched perfectly

Endless,

I have a 2001 CC, but the center console for the reg cab should still work. I would appreciate it if you found out how much it was for me. I live in Florida. Email me at bryant745@aol.com if you find out somemore info. Thanks a lot!
P.S. the reg cab console should fit the CC, right?

Thank you, Fatmat789, that helped my confidence into buying the cluster...I'll go pick it up tomorrow.

Jason,
Im not too sure if its the same as the CC. It looked a lot different when I looked at the interior. I could be wrong though. I'll try and take some pictures tomorrow to confirm. I'm still new to this, so I really dont know if the RC will fit the CC. I'll write and forward the pictures to your email.

Les

PS Thanks again for the info on the cluster guys!

Hey guys
I was gonna swap my computer with a MOpar one and the delaer said they have to reporgram my mileage in the computer? they said the mileage is stored in the computer. they also told me that the codes that pop up even if they get cleared with the disconnection of the battery they are still stored in this area where they can be brought up by a computer or they go away after so many key on starts if the code doesnt come up again within that time. I would think it was in the computer from what the dealer told me

ROB454,

I think the dealer is messing with you. I'm pretty sure that the computer doesn't store the mileage. I used to have a grand cherokee and I used to take out a fuse and keep the miles from rolling and everytime I took it in for service they never said anything. I am almost positive that the miles are only stored on the cluster.

on a 98 durango I fixed a while back, The lady hit a telephone pole sideways, and broke the whole dash. we fixed the truck, and got a junk yard cluster for $100 the truck had 12'000 on it, and the cluster from the j/y had 22'000 on it, as soon as we plugged it in, the computer told the cluster to display 12'000. we were pretty happy about it, and so was the lady who owned the truck.(she wasn't real keen on the idea of almost doubling the mileage she already had) I'm not positive with the 2001, but in 98 the computer remembers the mileage.

Hmmm...
Well, I dont know what to do but "borrow" the cluster while I'm there, plug it in, and see what happens. Hopefully the cluster shows my mileage. The people there said it was around (29,xxx) which is where my truck stands, but you know the junkyard sometimes.
I just hope they'll let me try it out.

You can buy a new or used cluster, they have them on ebay......and the mileage IS STORED IN THE CLUSTER ITSELF.

After you get the new/used one installed, a trip to the Stealer, I'm sorry, Dealer is on order to get the cluster flashed with the correct mileage.

i have a 99 r/t with the mopar pcm in it. i didn't have the mileage programmed into it and the cluster still displays the right mileage. the only problem with not having the mileage programmed in is that it makes your abs and brake light come on.

Yes, it's not in the computer, it's in the cluster itself.

what a POS the dealer is. if what you guys say is true the dealer wanted to charge me 140$ to reprogram the mileage in the new computer. I remember them specifically saying it is to reporgram the mileage. I ended up not buying the computer cause with their 140$ for reprogramming and 100$ for installing it it would of cost me 700$ to swap computers so I bought a winch instead

Jason,
I emailed you about the center console. Just in case you dont check your email, they want $50+shipping for it. Let me know if you want it.
Also, did you need the whole center console...all the way down to the floor with cup holders?
