Message: I'm a 17 year old who wants a Dodge Dakota more than any other truck. i have found a 2000 Dakota with the 4.7 V8, sport package, all black and 79 000 Km's. i think it's a 4 speed auto and it rides beutifully. i was just wondering if there were any guys who could give me some info on what to look out for on them if anything. i heard that the ball joints wear out fast and so do the serpintine belts because the pulleys are out of allignment. also i was wondering about gas milage, the tires are 31' goodyear wrangler RT/S on 15' aluminum rims, don'ty know what the gears are. any info would be ggreatly appreciated.

Message: Expect 15-18 mpg; you likely have 3.55 gears, there should be a tag in the glove box and there was one on the rear too. All vehicles have some shortcomings, front brakes and ball joints seem to be the Daks. I don't believe Dak's have a reputation for the serpentine belt wear, they will wear on any vehicle with mis-aligned pulleys, not a Dak problem. Enjoy your choice !

Message: I say wait until next year and get a new model Dakota. They are redoing the body style and supposively it's going to look pretty sweet. Anytime a new body style comes out and I still have the old one it makes my vehicle feel obsolete. Just my input. I have a 2001 R/T right now, but as soon as the new R/T 's come out I am probably going to trade mine in or sell it.

Message: General rule of thumb, never ever buy the first release of something. Inevitably, bugs/gremlins will show up. Takes a year (or 2) to fix problems.
i.e. the new 5.7 Hemi. They've had catastrophic spring & rod problems on very low mile engines. Dodge is all over the problem but its inevitable.
I was once told, stay one step back from the cutting edge.
And no, the 2005 Dakota will probably be an ugly duck like the Durango.
Nothing is perfect. Aside from probably needing ball joints, my 01 QC has been good. If you can find a solid GenIII i say go for it.

Message: 2k1r/t - are you serious ? Wait and buy new ? When I was 17 the concept of "waiting" was just about as foreign as the concept of being able to afford to "buy new". Maybe you could be of real help to the guy and give him your old one ?...

Message: why don't you get the best factory off-road truck and buy a GMC Highrider or Chevy ZR2. nevermind the imitators, go with the real thing.
