Message: Sorry about your dak.
The U joint has NOTHING to do with a 4.7, neither does the alternator for that matter.
You can't change a u joint?
Then I bet you don't do your own oil changes either, right? You take it to a juffy lube type place, that puts in 5 quarts of new, crappy oil.
Did you even know that the 4.7 takes SIX quarts? Yea, I'll bet those shops don't either. So, you've been driving around, on 5 quarts since it was new, with probably the SAME oil filter, and crappy oil, etc. and now your oil pump got sludged up and quit working, and then you blaspheme that the 4.7 is junk because your u joits went out, (gee, they never go out), and your alternator wnet out too, and you blame it on this kick ass engine? Helllllooooo!

Message: mobil 1 synthetic oil is not junk oil and yes i change my own oil every 3-5000 miles due to the fact that it is used for work. I use a mechanic for all repairs due to the fact that he is a good friend and can provide receipts for tax purposes.
I should have just said dodge is junk because every one i know with one is complaining! im going japanese as soon as my junk gets a new engine. If you want more proof ask a tow truck driver. they make a lot of money on dodges.

You oil pump went out, and you didn't quit driving with little or no oil pressure, and now the engines burned up?
My 4.7 is three years old, runs excellent, the only work it's had is installing HO cams asnd intake, etc.

Message: $525 repair on a p/s pump!! Woah.. When I broke mine (not a failure) I bought a 20,000 mile old one from a junk yard for $80 and stuck it right in there. It even came with a pulley, so I didn't have to jack with that. It's a really easy swap, labour shouldn't have been but maybe 2 hours from start to finish.
Whoever you went to, don't go there again. Even the pump from the dealership was only like 230-250 bucks or something. Ouch..

Message: The problem you are having is a common one with the Dodge Dakota's equipped with the 4.7 liter engine. The problem stems from the fact that the Dodge 2.7 and 4.7 liter engines have a problem with engine sludge build up; this clogs the pick up screen and causes the oil pump to fail. Many people have to replace the engines in their vehicles. There is a movement to file a case action lawsuit against Chrysler because this is a known flaw with the engine and Chrysler has done nothing about it. The problem has occurred on vehicles with less than 25000 miles to over 80000. Go to bigclassaction.com to place your name in with the hundreds of others who have had the same problem.

You gotta ask yourself one question...That Thing Got A HEMI???

Message: Hey I resent that Jiffy lube comment above. I always recommend to my customers that they should change their U joint fluid with every oil change. A few suckers even fall for it.
And I always make sure Dak owners are aware of that extra $8 for the sixth quart of oil they need. Some guys just have me change the air in their tires instead. Anyone that "takes care" of their car knows they need that.
Theres no way Im taking the blame for the alternator going out. I only sliced the belt.

Message: I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota Club Cab with 60k miles.
In November 2002 a problem with oil pressure began (oil pressure would drop off). The dealer said "Oh, it's the Oil Sensor Pump", so they replaced it.
One month (Dec 02) later the oil pressure prob returned. I went back to the dealer and this time they replaced the Oil Pump. I was about fed up with Dodge by this time.
NOTE: Oil has been changed every 3-4k miles with maintenance upkeep completed at the Dodge dealer.
Well, here it is Feb 2004.....14 months later. The same problem (losing oil pressure) has come back. Now the dealer says it's a SLUDGE problem and it'll cost $1000 to clean it up.
What BS!!
I see there is movement to file a case action lawsuit against Chrysler for this same problem. This is not a quick fix.
Any recommendations?

Message: Wanna talk about junk and Japanese. I just traded my Honda accord in with 130k nothing replaced except tires and oil. I love Hondas. Now lets talk about trucks. I got a 2000 QC 4.7. No probs, however, my friend has 2001 Nissan QC Frontier and her list of major problems is a mile long. Dodge definitely builds a better truck than Nissan at least. Oh, and buy the way, my wife used to have a 2002 Frontier (probs before 10k) traded it in an a Piece of junk Sentra Spec V.

Message: My '00 QC 4X4 4.7L auto must have been built on a Friday then! It has 68K highway miles and it has been the worst truck I've owned to date! Since it was new it's been in the shop for one stupid thing or another. Before 20K miles Wheel balancing(wasn't done at the factory!!), fog lights(both heat cracked), PCM reprograming 4 times, 2 sets of rotors & a number of smaller complaints that were addressed. Between 20K to present fan clutch, steering rack, left tierod end, left heated mirror died, left rear power door lock died, tapping in engine(who knows whats causing that!), headlight switch broke, drivers seat shows wear, front suspension squeaks like it has a million miles on it(yes I've replaced the shocks), rotors AGAIN, tranny is slipping out of lock up, anti-spin rear is making noise(yes I've changed the fluid), I fear I have a u-joint going bad and several other things that have slipped my mind.
All of this probably sounds petty to most of you, but I've had 2 chevy K-1500 trucks(90&96)both of which went over 200K miles(one had 270K & the other had 210k miles)WITH OUT any problems(not even a waterpump!!). All 3 have highway miles, but my Dakota doesn't seem to be holding up as well as the Chevys did. It's too bad because I really like the truck. If it wasn't for my pending divorce(and the money it's costing)I would be first in line to trade my Dakota in on a new GMC Sierra.
I don't think the 4.7L is junk....I think Dodge just builds junk overall! I've had 2 Stratus's, a Cirrus, a Ram van and 4 Neons in the family ALL of which are pretty much shot before 70K miles. AND Dodge does not like to recall!

Message: Well, you won't be much happier with the Silverados. My company buys a new Chevy every year and they keep the old ones around for about 6 years. Since 1996 every new Chevy we have bought has had to have a new transmission except for one and it's a 1999 manual. They got so fed up with the automatics that in 1999 they finally got a 5spd. Well, in less than 4 months the slave hydraulic master cylinder for the hydraulic clutch went out. It appears that Chevy didn't match the travel of the clutch pedal to the stroke length of the master cylinder. So, they put a rubber bumber in the floor board just under the clutch pedal. This was to prevent bottoming out the piston in the master cylinder. The rubber bumper was so small and flemsy that it layed over to the side instead of cushioning the pedal. One of our guys that was 6'7" tall drove it and he shoved the piston in the master cylinder out the back of it. Buy the way, the whole master cylinder is PLASTIC! This happened again 6 months later and again 4 months after that. We finally made a permanent stop out of metal and bolted it through the floor board so that the clutch pedal couldn't be pushed all the way to the floor. What a P.O.S.!!!!!

Message: I have a 2001 Jeep GC w/4.7 and approx. 45,000 mi.
Have not had one problem with it. I love it!
To the guy with all the problem Mopars he's owned: we've had Neons, Stratus', Cirrus', Avengers, Shadows, Daytonas, and Jeeps. Some with approx. 200,000 miles when traded or sold. We (wife, son, daughter, and I) have never had a major problem with any of these vehicles. Yeah, you replace pads and rotors occasionally, or maybe struts once, but this is routine maintenance on all cars and trucks. If you maintain any vehicle, it should run a good long time with no major problems. Re: sludge problems- does this occur on vehicles that a driven short distances and don't get fully warmed up? Fortunately(?), I drive approx. 25 mins. to work each day at highway speeds and my 4.7 gets good and warm so the codensation doesn't form as on short drive cars. When I change my oil (all 6 qts.)and filter at 3000 mi., it is still up to full level and is still relatively clear. I could probably wait longer between changes, but for the price of an oil change, why wait?
