Subject: Good deal on this 2000 5.9L QC? IP: Logged
Message: Hi guys,
This is my first post since I'm getting ready to purchase my first Dakota. I'll be selling my 97 S10 to finally move up to the QC Dakota.
I'm looking for a 4.7 or 5.9L QC 2WD sport Dakota here in Tampa. Tomorrow morning I'm looking at one that a guy is seling privately. It's a 2000 5.9L Sport Plus with all the major options like overhead console, Infinity, buckets, AT, etc (no leather) and has 42,000 miles. The guy says he babied it (never towed or modifed) and it looks it. It looks to be in near perfect condition in all of his pictures. He's now asking $15,000 and claims thats his payoff and can't afford to go lower.
Is this a good deal? I think it's a bit high, but I haven't seen a lot of these yet since I just started looking...since it's got the 5.9, is a sport, and is RED, it's pretty much the exact truck I want....and there really aren't a lot of these.
So if any of you who know current prices could let me know what you think I'd really appreciate it. I look forward to talking with you guys in the future...can't wait to drive this thing tomorrow!
Thanks!
Sean

Message: i have an 01 QC 4x4 5.9L. I think my blue book is around 16-17k. i have same options with leather. (SLT Plus package). I only have 39k miles too.
the price may be a tad on the high side but its arguable. Chances are you could talk it down a thousand or two. Good luck!

Message: Thanks. He says his payoff is $15,000, so this may be firm. He said he'd rather hold onto it than to pay to sell :-/

Message: Sean,
I'm just down the road in Valrico (work on Macdill) with an '02 5.9 4x4 Sport with all the bells and whistles...with a matching topper. For comparisons sake, you can drive mine and see what you think. I've got gibson headers and a dynomax single exhaust system as well.
Just thought I'd offer if interested during your shopping experience..

Message: Well I looked at it and drove it this morning. The truck is super clean and in excellent shape. No he's not getting a 4.7, he got the truck out of a divorce and will drive his Passatt.
He came down to 14,500 and will throw in 2 plane tickets (long story, but he's in sales and has a bunch of them built up...I come up with some crazy negotiation tactics). He said CarMax will give him 12,000 for the car if he just drops it off there...The truck has the window sticker and was $26000 new...pretty much what the new ones are running now before rebate. He's not marketing the truck real hard, so I have time to think about it. I told him I like it, but it's the first one I've seen and driven...I haven't found too many sports with the V8, etc.
Viking, thanks for the offer. I may take you up on that. I'm going to try to stop at some more dealers tonight after work to get more comparisons too...
BTW, the only thing I found with the truck is that it clunked up in the front suspension. Reminded me of a ball joint sound...I heard Dakotas are having an issue with those, so that's something I'll have to look at.
Thanks for your help...Keep the opinions coming!

Message: Good idea to hit the dealerships and kick a few tires...feel free to drop me a line if you want to drive my '02. I'll need to snatch it from the Mrs and bring it to work. My truck is her daily driver hauling the kids around. (She feels a bit more survivable in it than the sedan).
W: 827-1749
H: 685-4333
Good luck with your research.
FYI. I think my QC has about 23K on it right now. Just had the truck on the lift. Still has no leaks, drips, issues of any sort. Ball joint gripes have been non-existent on my '02. Does pull to the right after Mrs hit a curb last week doing a U-Turn...Oh well, have to get an alignment. Whatever you decide, get it to a mech and on a lift...get under and take a look.

Message: Wow, sorry to here you lost so much to depreciation, but I think you're right. It's easier for people to buy new these days because of great financing...makes 10-15K+ used vehicles hard for private sellers to unload. Thanks for the info. I've decided that that 2000 I looked it isn't worth more than 13,500.
I drove a clean 2002 SLT last night. It was a 4.7L but was loaded..got him down to 15,200...just $750 less than the 2000...it does hae 36K miles, but that's still 6K less and 2 years newer than the 2000....we're going to sleep on it...it's still going through detailing so it won't even go on the lot yet. I wanna make sure I'm ready to get in debt that far...I'd love to find one for $10-12K
FYI, the 4.7L I drove was MUCH peppier than the 5.9L I drove yesterday. The only diff was the 5.9L had big 4WD size tires on it...not sure of ratio on that one, but 4.7L was 3.90. I was VERY happy to find that the 4.7L will be adequate...I was lamenting the 13 mpg the seller of the 5.9L claimed...

Message: I work for a salvage yard in ID. I see all type sof stuff moving at all ranges of prices. I bought my 5.9 QC last year for about 15k. It came in wrecked and this price was for fully fixed with a warrenty. Yes, it does have all the bells with some very nice rims. (To me)That was well worth the price I paid. I have never been more thrilled about a truck.
If you are looking to sell try selling on the internet. My company and I have been selling cars all around the world these days, not to mention that were a single family owned savage yard in ID). These places incluced Sweden, Saudi, and Tahiti. and people didn't even argue the prices and paid for shipping as well.
If you'd like to have a look we do have a Dakota or 2 in our yard for parts and one as a rebuildable (wrecked).
