Message: Ya ... it was quite evident that they were all sick of hearing me bitch, whine, and moan when the dealership called and said, "Um, ya, we just got a call from Dodge Corp Customer Service ... and we're, um, just gonna replace anything that might be causing your idle problems." Ok -- Fine by me. Guess this is the perfect case of the 'Squeaky Wheel' being a catalyst for the 'Shotgun Approach'.
In any event, thanks for your ideas .. I'm just so glad my DAK doesn't sound like an old Pinto every time I stop at a light anymore. Got a nice glug glug glug coming through the MagnaFlow now. :o)

Message: I agree with Kowalski on this one.
The 5-45RFE is nothing like the previous tranny with the 5.9/5.2
I read in a good source that these FULLY ELECTRONIC tranny's have a total of 8 possible gear ratios it could achieve. However only the 6 are useful. At first it was 4 forward gears with the alt 2nd. Starting in 2003 you get 5 forward gears PLUS the alt 2nd. We get two OD ratios. A flash to the PCM will give the 2000 thry 2002 tranny's the extra gear.
Gear Ratios
1st 3.00
2nd 1.67 - upshift; 1.50 kick-down
3rd 1.00
4th 0.75
5th 0.67
Not counting the torque converter lockup that pople get confused with, my truck starts in 1st, goes thru 2nd, 3rd, 4th and then 5th. It locks up whenever you even out like usual.
If I take my truck MANUALLY out of OD it drops to 3rd gear and gets sh*ty MPG when towing. Yes the converter locks unless you gas it quick of course. But, if I leave it alone it does just drop from 5th to 4th during mild hills when towing and the converter IS locked.
As I have said over and over, these NEW tranny's do NOT hunt for gears. The only time I hit toe OD button is to engine brake going down hill which works great.
I have towed with my truck for almost a year now. It's a 2003. I wonder if some of the guys talking about "gear hunting" have ever driven the new tranny yet? It's not controled with just a valve body and kick down cable like the old ones. I agree, on all tranny's I have driven in the past, they DID go in and out of OD often if you left it on up hill.
Even when I'm not towing, my tranny will drop a gear if I am on a hill and stay there, even when it is not floored. Personally I like this tranny.

Message: Just got off the phone with the service department at my friendly neighborhood Dodge dealer about having my 45RFE in my '02 QC to a 5-45RFE. The service manager said he's never heard of doing anything like that ... pulled trans tech into the call .. trans tech said it could be done, but Dodge doesn't authorize it, so they can't perform the upgrade to the TCM/PCM. They said to look into aftermarket. Anyone have any ideas?

Message: OK -- called five dealerships. Got answers varying from "can't be done", to "not authorized", to "never heard of such a thing". Any clues? Anyone know of a dealer in PA/OH/NY/WV that could do this? I'd love to have a true 5 speed. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Message: Would a transmission control module (TCM) from a 2003 or 2004 545RFE plug into the wiring harness of an earlier 45RFE? If so, it would be a bit more expensive than a reflash of the TCM, but might work (if it comes already programmed). Just a thought.

Message: My 2003 has no TCM. I guess it's all one in my PCM compared to your 2000 thru 2002.
My PCM has 4 plugs. Yours has 3 correct?
For another example of mixed feedback from dealers. I know people here have said they had their dealer REMOVE their clutch fan (on the heavy duty cooling models) and the dealer then reprogrammed their PCM to being on the electric at a lower 175 degrees or so vs. the stock 200 to 210 or whatever I heard it was.
On my Dakota I removed my clutch fan myself, and built an electronic control myself to switch on and off the electric fan. It does around 175 to 170 making my truck run just warm enough to stay closed loop.
Yesterday I scheduled the reg maintenance that I have and asked about the dealer doing this. He said he never heard of such a thing. But people on here have found other dealers to do it.
Just goes to show you every dealer is different! Some more stupid than others.
I have screwed with my truck quite a bit in the short life it's had. Some of it I found ideas from here. Some where my own ideas. Some I just tried to "take on for the team".
I keep my mods posted here My Mods

Message: 2001 Durango. 4.7L V8. Just put new PCM. got rid of the lights, but car won't start for about an hour after shutdown. Notice the "P" and "N" positions on the dash won't high light. After an hour or so, it works fine. Mechanic told me it is the neutral switch, which is in a valve body assembly inside the trans. Said whole body has to be replaced. If you rock the shifter quickly, the positions don't always track well. When key in position just before on, shifter positions track fine. Why does it work fine after about an hour? Sometimes you move the shifter a couple of clicks after an hour and "P" lights up; car starts.

Message: Anyone have any luck getting someone to flash their TCM for the magic 545RFE conversion.
dodge_tech seemed to think any dealer can. My dealer couldn't reprogram my keyless entry to unlock only the driver's door or not sound the horn. I have doubts they can flash a TCM.
Actually I couldn't reprogram the keyless following the instructions in the owner's manual either.
It's an 01 4x4 quad cab. And yes it is a 4.7 with a 45RFE.

Message: I did this same mod to the PCM last yeat, and it worked fine. I have the same vehicle as well QC 01 4.7. Went to car-part.com and looked up the jeep part. Then ordered from Stricker's in Ohio. Got the PCM for $25 and shipping. Worked as soon as I hooked it up. Only problem was 1st at the bottom of a hill. Have to put it manually in low to get things to work correctly. Otherwise 4.0 . A good gas saver as well.
There used to be access to a search engine for this site so we wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel every time someone has a problem, but it seems to be a dead link now. Maybe some of the peanut gallery knows where it moved.
