Subject: Check Engine Code 171 IP: Logged
Message: Sorry if this is a repeat, but I didn't see my first post anywhere. My daughter has a 2000 Dakota, 4.7 V8. The check engine light came on and we took it to a dealer to have the code pulled. They told us it was 171 and suggested that we change the rear O2 sensor as well as the plugs. After doing just that, the code came back on. The engine runs a little better, but still smokes quite a bit. Could it have been the rear sensor that needed changing? We would really appreciate any help. Thanks

Message: PO 171 is fuel control code. I am a master smog tech at a dealer. I find that a po171 would have more to do with the mass air flow sensor or if it is a speed density system, a bad map sensor. now I believe you have a map sensor on that engine. if it is loading up with a lot of fuel. change the map sensor. a bad o2 sensor will not make it go real rich anyways. the other thing is the rear o2 sensor is for monitoring the cat. and does not do any fuel control. it only tells the pcm how well the cat is doing and would give a completely differnt code and fail the cat monitor. so who ever told you to change that sensor needs to go back to school.
