This is driving me crazy. I have only what I can describe as a ticking noise coming out of the engine compartment under acceleration. My wife's uncle said it was my injectors. I changed them to Bosch Series III (didn't help the problem, but I'd been wanting to get those anyway). Had my mechanic check the timing chain and valve train. He told me that there is no problem, that it was just a "damn noisy Chrysler engine". Suggested I turn my radio up louder. He told me that nothing is damaged and that I'll just have to deal with it. Anyone else have this problem? It's a 1999 with a 318.

And, uh, Greg. What size engine do you have in your truck again. I forget. Yeah, I took it to my mechanic during the time Lynn's site was in crashville and I never got a chance to post about that. I'm afraid I may have to break down and take it to the dealer. No one can seem to figure it out.

Does the ticking get faster as you accelerate? I had an exhaust leak that did that. What kind of fuel pump setup do you have? They can get noisy too.

I have a 5.9 and it sounds like you have the same thing I hear. It's completely normal. It's the fuel injectors/ignition. I have 42,000 miles on mine and it's done it since day 1. Just turn up your radio and don't worry. Have a safe and Happy Holiday Season.

Put a stethoscope to the fuel rails/injectors with the engine running - if it's the same rhythm and pitch, you'll feel the light come on over your head. If not, the use a piece of small diameter hose and take a listen around for an exhaust leak.
If you do find cause to suspect the injectors, what you may be hearing is fuel rail knock. I'm not familiar with the rail mounts on the 318, but if there are rubber isolators on the mounts, check those. Also, check voltage at the injectors - on some systems, a voltage drop will result in louder injector clatter. Corroded connectors/wires is a potential cause. Just some ideas - I fought this battle for 3 years on a Ford Bronco II, finally had a tube-type rail made to replace the stamped-tin pan style. Good luck!

Spali - Any idea why mine would do it and not all Dakotas? I changed the injectors to Bosch Series III and it still makes the same noise. Has yours ever increased in volume? It seems that it is louder now than it was before, but that may be that I am more aware of it now.
Scott - Thanks for the advice. I will try what you suggested. I don't think there are rubber isolators. At least I don't remember any from when I changed the injectors. I've never heard of fuel rail knock, but I'll definitely check that out.
The pitch does not change with RPM, but at low rpm under slow accel you can't hear it.
Greg - Lots of bizarre noises coming out of the rear tires too I bet.
Anyway, thanks guys you've given me some new stuff to think about.

From what you are describing sounds like an exhaust leak. chyrslers are know for that. a good test is to take some heater hose and stick it up to your ear, then move the other end around the engine till the sound gets louder. exhaust leaks at the manifold is common and gets louder on accel beause you are building more back pressure in the exhaust system. If you can hear it at idle then have a friend put it into drive with the brake applied and get it a little gas while keeping the brake on with the other foot so you can load the engine.I have never heard a loud fuel injector noise that could be heard form inside a car in 20 years of being a mechanic. Its an exhaust leak. let me know.

Nope. Definitely not an exhaust leak. Checked it myself, then had it checked at a muffler shop. Sounds different than an exhaust leak anyway.
Daniel - I don't have pinging, but I may be able to help you with yours. First check your intake plenum. Take off your air hat and look down into the intake. If you have oil on the bottom, you need a new plenum gasket. Your symptoms sound like that's what's happening. If it's clean, try switching to a 180 deg tstat and put a cooler spark plug in, such as the Autolite 3923 or comparable. I'm putting my money on the plenum though. Not hard or expensive to do, but it is time consuming because you have to take a BUNCH of stuff off to get to it.

Hi timberwolf, I think I know what's driving you nuts with the ticking noise. I also have the same truck you have and shortly after I bought it I have the same problem. I went through everything, brought it to the dealer...no help. The problem I found was the steering linkage in the engine compartment was "ticking." A quick shot of lithium grease and the noise was gone never to return. I give it a shot now and then just to be sure. This was after big bucks and oiling even my dashboard components. What a relief. I thought I was going to have to get rid of it because of that tick.

Phil. Was your noise only when accelerating? Did it happen while going in a straight line, or only while turning? Where on the linkeage should I grease? Is it where it connects to the stearing gear? That would be strange if that was it, but wierder things have happened. Oh, did you ever find out why it was making that noise? I will definitely try that though, just let me know where to grease it.
Thanks!

Timberwolf thanx for the heads up.

I have the same damn noise. 4.7 motor though so it looks liek its happeniing on a couple of different engines. Its driving me up a freakin wall. I like my cars to run good. It was doing the ticking for a while but now its getting louder. its so loud in fact it sounds liek a old buick thats been run ragged. ticks me off man.
I know its not exhaust leak cause its only doing it when its in gear rolling. it wont do it at idle or revving the motor in park. I have the day off so im gonna go through the whole freaking top and bottom to see if I can locate
it
Rob

Exactly like mine. If I rev it at idle, nothing. If I'm driving, but coasting, nothing. Only when I accelerate. Mine got louder a couple months ago, but seems to have stabilized.I'm like you, even the slightest flaw needs to be fixed. There's nothing worse than a noise you can't find. Let me know if you figure this out and I'll let you know if I do.

I know this is an old post but this just started happening to my 2000 4X4 CC 4.7. The really strange thing is that it doesn't do it in 4WD. It is a very loud clicking noise on hard acceleration, much louder than an exhaust leak or loose steering linkage. I can't get it to do it unless the truck is rolling. I'm wondering if you guys ever found out what the problem was. My trucks long out of warranty.

Well I finally figured mine out. its the valve on the last cylinder on the driver side. I went through headers thnking its a exhaust leak took them off and went back to the stock manifolds ( so now I got headers Ill never use) and the ticking is in the ehad. i talked to a buddy of mine who worked for dodge and he said they had some come back and replaced heads and it still came back and he is saying a lot of them are starting to do it. he said itrs a inherent noise at least thats what dodge is telling him
