Subject: weres the fuel filter at? IP: Logged
Message: My buddy has a 2000 super chrged r/t and i just placed a message but i frogot to say that we think he is having problem because its running to lean because of the fuel filter being full of stuff. the guy at napa told us that the filter was in the fuel pump and we thought it was on the frame rail. so does any one have any idea were the fuel pump is on a dodge dakota r/t?

Message: Could be the cause, why don't you all have the AF checked out and you'll be absolutely sure. The Dakota's filter will not be found on the firewall, it will not be found attached to the frame. It's inside the tank. Don't know what that engineer was thinkin'...
It's a cruddy job, that's why I say have the A/F checked out first. Hell, since he's running a supercharger, it's not a bad investment to have a metre installed in his truck.

Message: The fuel filter is pluged into the top of the tank, it is a combination unit with the pressure regulator. Dealer item.

Message: Easiest way to get to the pump is to take the bed off. This may sound obvious, but if your buddy didn't put bigger injectors in after the supercharger install that could be another reason for the lean condition. Get it pressure tested and go from there.

Message: I definelty have to agree with Timberwolf, the injectors if not done, should be next on the to do list, and also double check the FMU, and make sure all the fuel lines going into it are installed correctly and that you have the right diaphragm in it. Hope this helps. The fuel filter should not be clogged already.

Message: I called the dealer and they said the bed has to be removed in order to remove the fuel pump. He also said its more like a strainer than a actual fuel filter. I still think someone was on crack when they designed it. When mine is due for a replacement Im going to completely remove the strainer and then add a inline filter on the frame rail. all im gonna need is a tubing bender some fuel line tube and a few fitings and a flare tool. then i would use a fuel filter like the one in my wifes GMC Jimmy. Metal construction and threaded ends.

Message: The bed doesn't have to be removed to do it, but it's the easiest way. You don't have to drain the tank, or try to lay on your back to disassemble and reassemble it. Oh, and lots of vehicles now have the pump/filter in the tank. Not saying they should, just that Dodge isn't the only one doing it. Also, with fuel injected vehicles, it's not as simple as picking a filter off the rack at Autozone and attaching it with a couple hose clamps. You need to find a filter that is designed to run on a system with the same pressure as yours or you will run into problems with proper fuel delivery. So, do your research first.

Message: Well Ithought most Fuel injection ( not TBI) run gfairly high pressure 50 somethign PSI. I know carbed and TBI run lower pressures. I suppose I can use one off a diesel but thats overkill. I can take my pressure guage and check the PSI at the fuel rail and see what will work.
thanx for the heads up

Message: My 92 has the same basic fuel system as the other magnums. I have an inline filter. I wouldn't think it would be too hard to get a filter from the autoparts store and adapt the stock fuel line. It wouldn't stop your filter screen from getting clogged up, but it would keep your engine cleaner.

Message: didja put in both larger fuel injectors as one on here recommended and is actually required due to higher fuel flow requirements but also a LARGER VOLUMN FUEL PUMP? ya gots ta have both. IF ya did put in a lager flow pump ya would have seen that the filter is in the tank when you replaced the pump, since you asked a question as to where th filter is, your fuel pump is most likely stock , flows too low and will eventually cause piston holeing due to the lean condition you started be doing an incomplete job. Get a real mechanic, not some shadtree joke like yourself to go over the whole fuel system before you launch the engine due to overheating the combustion chamber.

Message: I have a 1994 Dakota with a 5.2 Liter V8 Magnum. I searched the frame rails on both sides of my truck to no avail in locating my fuel filter. By the looks of the new filter(stainless steel encased)I would imagine it would exposed to the elements at an easily acessable spot. Does anyone out there know an exact location?

Message: On the 92, It's on the driver's side just inside the frame. It may help to follow the fuel line up.
If you do not have one inline, you may only have a filter on the pump intake. You will have to drop the tank or remove the bed to pull the pump. If you decide to drop the tank, let me know. I had to drop a full tank and have an easy way to do it.
Good Luck!
