Subject: Trade my Dak for a 4.7? IP: Logged
Message: Right now I have a 99 5.2 slt 4x4. I'm thinking about trading it and getting about a 2000 or 2001 4.7 5 speed 4x4 either a rc or cc. I think I could pretty much trade straight accross for a 2000 since I have really low miles. Were there any problems with the 2000 4.7s? What kind of performance could I expect out of a 4.7 rc 5 speed 4x4? And how about the gas mileage? Right now I get 11-13 city and 15-16.5 interstate. Thanks.

Message: Hey there hank,
I LOVE my 4.7! but I have the auto version, so I might not be able to tell you everything you need to know. Some people with the 4.7 say that we have a shaky idle. I have not ever had a problem with mine (infact mine idles at 900 rpm).
The 4.7 is a slight pig on gas but no more that you 5.2 I would say. I get about 16 mpg, but those are all city. I have no idea about highway.
Also the 4.7 I *FEEL* is a much quicker truck than the 5.2. PLEASE do get on my case but I contunualy beat 5.2 in races (my friend has a 5.2 and we race every once in a while. It is hard to find a lone strach of road totaly away from people or hazards). I have much more pickup than most belive and it is VERY hard for me to keep from turnin and burnin at stoplights (but I live in WA, so we get lotts-o-rain).
If you realy want to get rid of your 5.2 I would definatly go fo the 4.7. The aftermarket market is going well now and people are gettig good results for not too much cash.
I have the 2000 modle which in my opinion is one of the better ones. We were the last years of some of the good things in older dodges. And the first year with some of the upgrades.
When there is a mod for 97+ daks they usaly only go from 97-00 and when there is new mods for *newer* trucks it is usaly starting in 2000.
So anyway SORRY for the long post. Hope I helped.
Happy Holidays Everyone!
Alwasy thankfull,
Ben

Message: Hank: Just two small things to consider . I believe 2000 was the last year for the old interior, the 2001's have the current one. Also, the 2000's had a 65mm throttle body on the 4.7, the 2001 had 68mm. If you get a '01, you get to buy two sizes of wiper blades! (Whoopie).

Message: Why the heck do you wanna do that? the 5.2 is a fine engine. At least you can find performance parts for it. youre not gonna gain anythign by replacing it with a 4.7 engine. Stick with what you have bro. why do you want to go to a smaller displacement motor that has its torque higher on the RPM band.
You can get a bunch of performance out the 5.2. besides I dont know if the harnesses will swap over. sounds liek its gonna cost a bundle unless you find a wrecked dakota 4.7 and take everythign off

Message: I have a 02 4X4 with the 4.7.. Great engine but
it sure doesn't have the low end torque those
5.2's do. I pull a 26' 3500 lb camper. I had a 98
Dak with the 5.2 and now my 02 with 4.7. The 5.2
got me up to highway speed much faster with less
effort than this 4.7 ever does.
The Auto tranny in overdrive will shift in and
out of overdrive all the time also. Any small
hill in cruse control will downshift you. And
that is not pulling anything at all.
Next Dak I get will be stick.. No more auto's for
me! I don't care for all the up and down shifting
it does.

Message: Are you comparing trucks with different gear ratios ? Or different weights ? The 4.7 has similar torque to the 5.2 with a more efficient transmission. I tow a 24.5' fifth wheel camper and can hang with or beat about a dozen people I go to the NHIS Nascar races with, two of them diesels and a couple of Chevy 350s. My truck almost never hunts gears in overdrive and lots of hilly driving, maybe yours needs some adjustment ?

Message: he needs to shut the OD off when towing anything-- with OD on it is designed to hunt for gears as it has too fine a line to cross for mthe Od and the torque converter lockup when used together -- turn that oD off

Message: FYI - on the gas mileage with a 4.7. I have been getting around 15 in the city (quick starts, steep hills,..); Hwy I get 19 and sometimes 20 (that's at average speed of 70-75+). I am pretty happy with the mileage. Oh - cheap gas too...

Message: I made the switch you are pertraying to in your question, 99 Dak 4x4 CC 5.2 Auto --> 00 Dak 4x4 CC 4.7 Auto.
Although not by choice ( 99 was stolen and wrote off ) the switch turned out for the better in my opinion. The 5.2 didnt perform up to my expectations and the fuel economy wasnt as great as the 4.7's. Little more peppy feel for the 4.7 over the 5.2. Overall I'd go for a 4.7 just for the fuel economy as thats the only really thing I think you would notice...I have nothing against the 5.2 as I would still have one if people would buy their own trucks instead of stealing other people's.

Message: Are you kidding? MY 2003 pulls frigging GREAT on the highway and on my last trip to the dunes I pulled a larger load (two quads in a trailer, camping gear for my family of four incuding three ice chests, and a load of firewood in the bed) so I took the OD off. Bad mistake. i got about 9.7 MPG on the way there. So. on the way back I was somewhat lighter without the wood and decided to keep the OD on. I don't know about the 2002 and OLDER tranny's but mine does not HUNT back and forth for gears. It finds one and stays there for a while.
I noticed that if I leave the OD on and when I am on only a slight grade or going faster like 80 to 90 MPH (wind resistance) that it will drop from 5th gear into 4th gear (which is STILL an overdrive ratio) with the TC still locked and stay there for a long while. If you manually turn off the OD the thing drops down to 3rd gear and gets sh*tty MPG. I just leave my OD on unless there are certain circumstances. Such as when we are going up a big hill, behind slower vehicles pulling trailers (Like Chevy Tahoes HA HA!) and I want mine out of OD ready to fly by their ass when I get a passing lane, etc. Last two trips to the dunes I PASSED my family on the big hills every time and they were pulling a slightly heavier load but barely and were driving a CUMMINS turbo desiel with a 5 speed manual. So go figure.
When I told them this was only a 287 cid engine they didn't believe me!

Message: I would never trade a good old pushrod style v8 for an over head cam setup. The 318 is a very upgradable motor, u can get any kind of headers, intakes, throttle bodies, and internal parts for it. the 4.7 is not as upgradable, and is more expensive to repair. I say stick with the 318, but hey it's your truck.

Message: 4.7 is more expensive to repair ? Time will tell, but you'll never have to replace the belly pan gasket in a 4.7.
