Subject: IAC Motor Bad?? IP: Logged
Message: 99 Dak, 5.2 / Auto.
Been trying to get to the bottom of my cold start stumble and removed my IAC again to check its condition. (I think this may be my problem)
How would I know if my IAC motor is bad? I left the wire harness plugged into it while I had it removed from the throttle body, then I turned my ignition to the "run" position and watched the IAC plunger retract about 1/2". How does the plunger know where to stop? (I also think I accidentally pushed the plunger in a little bit with my fingers as I was testing it,, have I ruined it?)
Does the IAC "self adjust" itself when its installed in the throttle body?
Bottom Line,,,,,What would indicate a bad IAC?

Message: IAC's use 'stepper motors' basically that means it has a certain number of steps (around 150 I believe) that it can go in and out. it also uses these steps to keep track of where it is so it does know how far in/out the plunger is. They can be damaged very easily by depressing the plunger manually.
At work we can use a scanner to see where the IAC motor should be and where it thinks it is. I'm not sure how you can check it at home. Just have someone start up the motor and see if it moves. That wouldn't be real accurate, but if it doesn't move at all then you know its shot.
hope this helps

Thanks for the info!!....
Now,,,if I went and bought a new one and installed it without touching the plunger, would the new one "know where it is, and where it should be" automatically?
How do you folks go about installing new ones at your shop?

Message: If you reset your PCM (diconnect the positive battery terminal, and hold the key in start position for 15 - 20 seconds) the IAC motor will home itself the next time that you turn the key on. Then it will begin "learning" by remembering how many steps open it is at idle, and what the results were (how the motor ran).
