Hey all, I currently have a '97 kota, V6 5-speed, regular cab 2x4. I want to upgrade to a v8 extended cab, 4x4. I can't really afford anything newer than a 2000, but I really like the fuel millage of the 4.7 over the 5.2, and I absolutly will NOT own an automatic. I guess the question I have is this: In 2000, the 4.7 was a new motor, was it a good motor in 2000? Or should I say to hell with the fuel millage, and get a 5.2? Thanks everyone, Aaron

From what I have seen, the 4.7 gets about the same milage as the 5.2. I believe it's all how you drive it.
My 5.2 92 CC has 148k on it and will get 16-17 mixed and 19-20 on the highway. I pulled 21 once, but it isn't the norm.

I'm pleased with my 2000 4.7; arguably it may be the best year, the only year you can get the Mike Leach flash for it.

The 4.7 is a better engine in my opinion. It gets better mileage for sure than the 5.2

EBL, I have a 1992 5.2 4x4, 97000 miles, I get 13 to 14 around town and 16 to 20 on the road. Average for town and freeway about 14 to 15, you do very well with your truck.

It looks like we get the same highway miles. The difference is probably in the added friction of the 4x4. I only have 4x2.
I have no idea what straight city (stop and go all the way) driving is. I only do a small amount of it, never enough to gauge milage on. It could be 14mpg...
aaron, Both engines are good engines. I think history will show that about the 5.2 and the many testamonials from people like Kowalksi and Hemi will show the 4.7 is. The 4.7 is not time tested, but that doesn't mean it isn't durable. I don't believe you will see many engine families in the future have a life span of 40+ years. (The small block Mopar started in '64)
