Subject: Limited Slip/Anti Spin.. Same Thing IP: Logged
Message: Ok this may be a dumb question but here it goes.
I looked in my glove box (as several people have posted) to find out if I have a "Limited Slip Differential" and in my glove box it says I have a "Anti Spin Differential". Is that the same thing?
thanks

Message: Your dealer isn't entirely wrong. They call it "Limited" slip for a reason. There's a clutch between the rear axels and until the one with no traction starts to spin, power doesn't get transferred to the one with traction. It's the difference in the rpm's of the two axels that results in power being transferred. So, until there's slip, there's no transfer and even when there is slip, the transfer is only a "limited" amount, not a total transfer to the tire with traction. Unfortunately Dodge's solution to driving both back wheels while still making it possible to corner without 'skipping' one tire isn't the best the big 3 offer. But would you rather have a Chevy?

Message: Gary Carter:
A good upgrade for you might be a Powertrax no-slip locker. They are a self contained unit. v8performance.com, truckperformance.com, and summitracing all have them I believe. Take it easy on the gas when cornering though from what I understand or things get a little crazy at least until you get used to it. There are other on this board with the powertrax and have lots of good things to say about them.

Message: Dodges "limited slips" are much better than Ford has in the newer 1997 - up. I took my 2001 Ford back to the dealer for a check because one wheel would always spin..they told me the clutches release early because older customers don't want the ratcheting and noise caused by a real strong posi. Needless to say the Ford limited slip option for 180.00 was not very good on slick boat ramps. The Dodge (4X4) really locks up tight and will spin both wheels off if it has too - much better unit - don't understand why yours is loose. Can't comment on Chevy.

Message: Bill,
If you are changing your fluid, then you might want to look into a synthetic. They are a bit more expensive, but will help it overall. Besides, most synthetics do not need a limited slip additave.

Do you have a limited slip rear, and exactly what kind of lube did you use?

Message: Unfortunately TNJones is incorrect about the workings of the limited slip. Yes there is a clutch in the rear end but it doesn't need slip to transfer power. The clutch holds both axles to the same speed except when a large enough difference in force is applied to one wheel when compared to the other. This allows the clutch to slip during cornering...etc. An extreme traction difference such as dry pavement and ice presents the same type of differing forces between axle shafts and creates slippage as if you were going around a corner.

Message: With the extreme differences in traction for each tire( ice and dry pavement) it is hard for any limited slip to work, next time apply your parking brake just a little ( 2-3 clicks) and this will "trick" your limited slip enough to get you moving.....also works in some "open" differentials......I have a 78 CJ5 that I welded the spider gears "lincoln locker" ,It gets awesome traction, but I leave it in the garage if ice is on roads......lol

Message: I would rather have Anti Slip for off-road travel. As for Limited Slip, They do indeed slip and my Dakota proved it.
It's to bad you can't have limited slip in both axels, that would be very usefull when pulling a boat up a unpaved ramp.

Message: I'm curious if adding a heavier weight gear oil would
increase the 'power' of a limited slip. As in heavy oil= slower
cut out of one axle? My rc car's differential is affected by the
oil wieght, but does the same apply to full scale vehicles.
