Message: Anthony - you are an idiot for thinking the 4.7's powerband is peaky but I will help you anyway. You will need a computer for your year truck with the auto tranny, and should probably use the 45RFE - thats what that computer is designed for. "God looks out for fools and drunks".

Message: Hey loser above-Why such a strong reply, did I hit a sore spot when my 4.7 comment could be interpreted as negative? If the spam is true, maybe you could double up and add 4.7cm.
If you had taken the time to look at the 4.7's powerband, you would notice that the slope of torque curve is much steeper than say a 5.2L. The greater the slope on either side of the torque PEAK, the more "PEAKY" the powerband. The 4.7 is a slug below 3000 rpm, has a nice PEAK at 4000 rpm and is all over at 5000 rpm. For a truck application, this is a peaky powerband.
To make best use of the 4.7 torque curve, a close ratio transmission is a better choice. The NV3500 is a wide ratio transmission. The first to second gear change, for instance, allows the engine to fall way off the torque peak. At say 5000 rpm in first gear, the engine speed will drop to 2900 rpm in second gear. "God apparently does not look out for all fools and drunks".

Message: You are sadly mistaken, where is your info from ? The 4.7 has over 200 ft/lbs throughout most of its range, and the peak is not at 4000.

Message: You must have the 3.55 gears. If all you are wanting is
a closer ratio, then get a set of 3.92 gears... or 4.56! I
think switching transmissions would be a REAL waste
of money for not enough difference. What you would
gain in a "closer ratio" you will loose in drivetrain
power. I've got a 4.7 manual with 3.92's and 33 inch
tires and have plenty of power.

Message: My 4.7/5spd/3.92 is an incredible setup!! I always smile after shifting gears and the thing launches, she doesn't dog down at all. A manual transmission is more efficient and puts more power out at the rear wheels. I've found that she runs really well from 2500 to 5000+, seems like a good powerband to me...
Put the gears to it, a 3.55 is a terrible gear IMO if you have big tires.

Message: I don't think the 4.7 is peaky at all!
And the new 5-45RFE / 45RFE is said to be one of the least power robbing autos yet.
My 4.7 has plenty of off idle grunt. Sure rips the wheels easy without hesitation either.
Now. I got a new company vehicle that has a Chevy 4.8 Liter. Now THAT ENGINE is peaky. It really dogs to 3500 RPM's then takes off like a rocket. I would definitely pick my Mopar 4.7 over that Chevy 4.8 for towing any day!

Message: If I had to do it over again, my 02 4.7 4X4 with
tow package would have been a stick, not auto.
I tow a 26'camper. I leave it out of overdrive
like you should. I still don't like the way it
shifts.. It gets to high gear way before it
ought to. No power in forth gear going 30 mile an
hour pulling 3500 lbs.
I'm not about to let the dealer play with shifting
points either. From what I've seen, they have
a problem finding the hood release.
My next one will be a stick.

Message: Anthony,
NO flaming you from me, but I always thought that the autos had a little longer ratios per gear than the manual. ?
I know the first two seem shorter with the manual, given the same rear end gears.
