Subject: Oil Consumption IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1993 Dakota with the 318 with 92,000 miles. I am having major problems. I am using unbelievable amounts of oil. I am burning or leaking about quart of oil to 100 miles at the moment. I suppose I could be leaking it but I don't know where I could leak that much from without noticing it very easily. I tried the plenum and intake gasket change and that didn't help. I also took all the plugs out and replaced them and when this was done there was no trace of oil on them, they had the perfect chocolate brown color they should. The oil pressure gage in dash says just a little under half when at lowest during idle and rises slightly under acceleration. Nothing seems to lead me to any good ideas, and this is obviously a major issue. Any help would be great.

Message: Sure sounds like the plenum gasket problem , was burning a quart in less than 1000 miles and had the gasket replaced and it hasn't been a problem since ,can go betweeen oil changes without adding any oil . Not seeing anything in the coolant are you ? If not not sure what it would be .

Message: Well I know its not the plenum because that is new, and no noticable amount of coolant being lost or any in the oil. The oil just gets dirty quickly so I may have to face the facts and just say the engine is shot. Maybe just get rid of truck any way possible because I have had nothing but problems with this truck. I guess it may be time to buy a Ford.

Message: How is your compression?
Does squirting a bit of oil into the spark plug holes help it any?

Message: Fu*k Ford, if it was a Ford it wouldn't have made it to 92,000 in the first place.

Message: I agree. Do a wet compression test. 318 have 100psi minimum ( dry cylinder) try dry compression and see what the readings are. Maximum allowable variance is 25psi . then if the reading is low do a wet test ( pour some oil in the cylinder being tested and see what it is) if the reading is much higher then ur rings are bad.
did u ever overheat ur dakota ?????

Message: YEAH I HAVE A '99 5.9 AND WAS BURNING LOT'S OF OIL. I DROVE FROM CAMP LEJUNE TO RALEIGH ABOUT 3HR DRIVE AND BURNED 4QTS (58,000 MI). I FOUND OUT DODGE HAS BAD PLENUM GASKETS AND AM GETTING THAT REPAIRED FOR FREE RIGHT NOW. I KNOW YOU THINK THATS NOT IT BUT YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK INTO THAT A LITTLE HARDER BEFORE YOU START EXPENSIVE REPAIRS.
GOOD LUCK,

Message: check or change the pcv, this can cause oil loss.
plenuim gasket, compression check for the piston rings,
also the intake to head gasket can cause the same problem as the plenuim gasket.

Message: I had the same problem with my '93 @ 120,000 miles. bought it from a dealer, I went through nine quarts in the first 3 weeks of owning it!!, no oil leaking, slight blue smoke at start up only. Brought it back to the dealer, told me it was the valve guides were plugged, needless to say, they rebuilt top half of engine. I was lucky, the dealership was new and made the repairs for free!! on a 10 year old used truck!!! so guess where I go to buy my auto's at now??? Anyway, that was 35,000 miles ago, no oil added between any oil changes. I run 10/30 in summer..5/30 in winter...good luck
