Subject: Is this normal?? IP: Logged
Message: I purchased a 92 V8 Dak 4x4 in the summer. Now that winter is upon us I have to put it into 4x4 more often. It is pretty loud when it is engaged. I noticed that there is a humming noise when I accelerate and then is gone when i let off the gas(the tranny?)There is a slight humming when in 2 wheel drive but nothing this loud. Also the engine noise is considerably louder and more vibration. Normal? Chances are that the old man who had it before me didnt put it in 4x4 often...Something seized up or need to be greased? Could the humming noise be from the T-case, even when it is in 2 wheel? The oil change place I go to says that they cant check the level because it is blocked by skidplating? Maybe it hasn't been checked in years?
Thanks in advance

Message: First of all any shop telling you a skid plate is in the way shouldn't be even alowed within 1000 yrds of your truck. Even the guys at wal-mart will take the time to remove the skid and not only check the level but top it of if needed. I'm surprised they don't use that excuse when it comes to changing your oil too.
As far as your noise, I think your on the right track when you suspect the trasfer case. If the oil level has been excesively low for any length of time the plastic fingers and bearings will begin to degrade or fracture and cause the simptoms your begining to have. Also check your front diff. If fluid levels there are low then that can also start a wining sound to be audible.
Basicly find a mechanic that is interested in doing there job instead of picking at there asses and charging you for it with a smile on there faces.

Message: Thanks for the reply, I might as well get the oil in the diffs and t-case done.If it is the t-case, will proper level of oil hopefully re- lube the bearings and stuff or will something have to be replaced?
